The week ahead

This section introduces Week 2 and recaps on key points from Week 1.
George in his football kit and Vinita in her wheelchair holding an iPad beside a duck pond..
In this second week of the course, we will look at two areas of SEND in more detail through exploring the lives, experiences and needs of George, who has a diagnosis of Down’s syndrome, and Vinita, who has cerebral palsy.

We will explore these individuals’ needs and abilities through the perspectives of both the medical and social model of disability, and will draw out the ways in which their needs could be met at home and in educational settings.

In Week 1, you were introduced to key concepts of Special Educational Needs (SEN), disability, the medical and social models of disability and also the characters who will bring SEND to life and explore it in more detail. These concepts will underpin the next two weeks of the course, where we will explore what these models look like in practice and how SEND needs can be met.
