How the course works

This introductory module-based course is a contribution to the required competence building. To follow the course, you do not need any special background from wind energy or power systems.

Self-study online course

This course has no online classes or tutoring, student seminars, assignments, course credits or exams.

However, we will give you a broad outline of the fast-developing offshore wind technology and some of the challenges related to this development. We hope this can serve as a first step on the path to deeper and more specific knowledge.

You will gain basic knowledge from experts and can participate in discussions with fellow students. Course educators won’t be able to join the discussions themselves or respond to individual comments, but the course encourages a strong learning community. You are encouraged to support other learners, share your own experience and knowledge, and listen to new perspectives. We hope that you will enjoy interacting with and learning from each other in this way.

Course content

The course consists of six main modules altogether, touching upon these themes:

1. Introduction, perspectives and concepts of offshore wind energy

2. How to extract energy from the wind and what is wind

3. Wind, wakes and marine ground condition

4. Legal framework and coexistence

5. Impact on the marine ecosystem

6. Electrical systems

Each module consists of a few short lectures with specific learning outcomes. You will be asked some questions to reflect upon. Also, some issues for discussion are available. Here you are supposed to share your thoughts and reflections at the discussion page. A quiz is included after some lectures. That way you can check whether you have grasped the intended key learning outcome.
