Grid structure in a wind farm

Shujun Zhang talks about the basic components in building the electrical grid within an offshore wind farm.

This lecture presents the basic components in building up grids for offshore wind. HVAC and HVDC structures with detailed configuration are presented. Selection of HVAC or HVDC is also discussed.

After viewing the lecture, you will get overall knowledge about HVAC and HVDC for the offshore wind.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the lecture, you should be able to:

  • Explain cable connections from the offshore wind turbines to the onshore grid
  • Explain how the high voltage AC and DC are used in offshore wind
  • Compare the high voltage AC and DC for the offshore wind

Reflections

After having watched the video, you should reflect upon the following:

  • Which system should be used for offshore wind, high voltage AC or DC?
  • Why are the different voltages used for transmitting energy from offshore wind turbines to the onshore network?
