The skin surface in most fish species is covered with bony scales (in teleosts) or tooth-like denticles (in sharks). Not only the nature of surface textures in fishes but also possible hydrodynamic effects of variation in roughness around the body surface within an individual and among species need more attention. This study used manufacturing biomimetic foils with fish-like surfaces to apply hydrodynamic testing, and presents an overview of fish surface structures and their hydrodynamic effects studied under dynamic conditions.

The methodology of this study is very important. It is a good example of how to design the experiments when you want to compare the hydrodynamic effects among fish skin surfaces for future biomimetic studies and applications. From real skin of fishes to manufactured foil, you have to consider different situations of fluid movements and the limitations, and then plan a logical design of experiments.
