Shark Fisheries and Trade in Taiwan

Taiwan as one of the main countries of chondrichthyan catch in the world, the history of fisheries and development have to be understood. This report is very important to introduce historical shark fisheries including coastal, offshore and distant-water operations, markets, and trade in Taiwan, and it provides management and conservation recommendations. Sharks and batoids (skates and rays) products are described, and dominant species in main landing harbors and fish markets are also introduced.

The last section ‘CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS’ is important to have a relatively clear understanding of the development and changes of Taiwan’s past shark fishing industry. After almost 25 years, many management and conservation policies have been implemented, and several problems have been improved. However, many threats to extinction of chondrichthyans still exist. Based on this background knowledge, reasonable arguments for future fishery management and shark conservation policies can be made.
