What is technology-assisted decision-making?

Welcome to the world of technology-assisted decision-making! Think of a world where technology and people work together to make decisions. That’s what technology-assisted decision-making is all about – a mix of smart machines and smart humans working together to make the world a better place.

Technology-assisted decision-making refers to the use of computer-based tools and techniques to support human decision-making processes. These tools can range from simple decision-making aids, such as spreadsheets or decision trees, to more complex artificial intelligence (AI) systems that use machine learning algorithms to analyse vast amounts of data and provide insights and recommendations to humans.

You can look up these terms in the glossary if you’re not sure what they mean, but we will define one of them here, because it is central to an understanding of technology-assisted decision-making:

What is an algorithm?

An algorithm is a set of instructions or a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem or performing a task. It’s like a recipe that you follow to bake a cake, except that it’s used for things like solving maths problems, sorting data, or processing information. An algorithm can be thought of as a sequence of logical and well-defined steps that are taken to solve a problem.
