Course Learning Outcomes:

By the end of your studies on this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the different definitions of the Rule of Law
  • Evaluate which definition of the Rule of Law you prefer
  • Explain how the Judiciary are separate from the Executive
  • Explain how the Judiciary uphold the Rule of Law using judicial review and human rights law
  • Reflect on the effectiveness of the Judiciary in upholding the Rule of Law

Week 1 concentrates on understanding the Rule of Law itself – as you will see, there is no formal definition of the Rule of Law.

Week 1 Learning Outcomes:

By the end of Week 1, you should be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by the Rule of Law and appreciate the importance of the principle
  • Understand the different interpretations of the Rule of Law, and determine which definition you prefer
  • Identify potential breaches of the Rule of Law by examining some examples
