Let’s wrap up week one

This step will go back over some of the material you learned during the week.

Congratulations on making it to the end of week one.

You have been introduced to the world of virtual, augmented and mixed reality – often referred to collectively as extended reality or XR. By now you should have a good idea of what each type is, and have seen some interesting examples of how these technologies are being used.

You began the week by thinking about XR in different industries and how this area is expanding. Later we looked at the history of this technology and delved further into what immersive media can do, transforming audience experiences and focusing on the space all around.

This week you met Nonny de la Peña, who founded Emblematic in 2007. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of virtual reality, Nonny gave you some insight into her work as a journalist and documentary maker who was instrumental in bringing immersive journalism to the world. You also met Catherine Allen, co-founder and CEO of Limina Immersive who make it their mission to bring VR, AR and mixed reality experiences to larger audiences. We also explored the ground-breaking work Emteq are doing to improve facial palsy, combining VR, sensor data and human responses.

Next week you will continue to explore the skills related to creating immersive experiences and the ethical responsibilities that come with this territory. You will also look ahead to the future of extended reality and what we can expect to see over the next few years.
