The mystery of flight in bats

Why are bats the only true flying mammals. It turns out that we don’t really know.
Bats are the only mammals capable of sustained flight. That is, they flap their wings and maintain flight rather than gliding. So why are bats the only mammal to have evolved flight? This is one of the great mysteries of evolution and has come about due to a large gap (10 million years) in the fossil record. This article will explain some of the reasons why we are yet to figure out how bats evolved flight, and what information we need to be able to piece together the mystery.
