The course is taught in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) and it includes transcriptions in English, Catalan and Spanish. We study Catalan Sign Language in Catalan Sign Language. Written English, Catalan and Spanish are used as support, but not as a learning strategy.Study at your own pace.
For those who are new to sign language, please note: we don’t expect you to understand the videos perfectly from the beginning of the course. However, watching them will help you get familiar with the language and will improve your learning throughout the course.Subtitles.
To meet FutureLearn accessibility guidelines, all videos must have subtitles and transcripts. The videos in this course are subtitled in English. You can obtain the English transcriptions within the video player or by downloading the transcript file that you will find below each video. A language needs to be learnt within a context. Immersion is the best way to learn a language and this is why from the very beginning we offer you signed materials. We are aware that speed might be an issue for some of you. At the bottom of each video, there is a speed selector. By default it is set at 1x, but you can select 0.5 and it will show at half speed.Contents of the course.
Every week includes two major themes: learning the language and thinking about the deaf community. We will learn how to sign, but it is also very important to place the language in the environment where it is used. This is the reason why the contents include instructional aspects, as well as food for thought.
