Sign languages and Catalan Sign Language

Catalonia’s own sign language is Catalan Sign Language.

Catalan sign language, LSC, the language used by the deaf and the deaf-blind signers that live in Catalonia. It is very important to take into account account that not all deaf people are users of sign language; there is a subset of deaf people who uses other communication methods. Deaf people who are users of sign language can communicate with friends, relatives, colleagues or students who live in Catalonia and know LSC. In Catalonia, there are approximately 27,000 people that use LSC language, and around 7,000 of them are deaf. Catalonia is a bilingual society; two oral languages are spoken, Catalan and Spanish; and, on the other hand, we find LSC.

Deaf and deaf-blind signers only use this one sign language, which is specific of Catalonia. This group of people has no difficulty in communicating with all the rest of society as they can do it through oral language or LSC. LSC has been used in Catalonia for a great many years and during this time many different materials have been created in this language, such as dictionaries, signed stories and teaching resources, among many others. Moreover, LSC has also already developed its own basic grammar. The main goal of all these resources is to provide the language with rules and help to homogenize and standardize it.
