Some limit it to environmental issues, while others equate it with corporate social responsibility. This essay revisits the original meaning, arguing that sustainability requires considering time. It obliges firms to make intertemporal trade-offs to ensure intergenerational equity. By highlighting the role of ‘time,’ we differentiate sustainability from responsibility and similar concepts. The lack of time consideration in strategic management has led to short-termism, harming sustainability. We suggest future research to integrate sustainability into strategy, fostering a thriving future for business and society.
