Green bonds’ popularity rises in corporate finance, yet their impact on issuers’ environmental engagement remains unclear.

Using matched bond-issuer data, we examine if green bonds reduce total and direct emissions. Compared to conventional bonds, green issuers show lower carbon intensity post-issuance, especially without refinancing, indicating increased climate-friendly activities, reinforced by external review and post-Paris Agreement issues.
