Civilization is built on stories  everything nations, continents, monies,   peoples identities everything is created  on stories and the builders of those   stories are also the builders of realities  of humankind. That’s why media is so important   because media is the outlet that in a massive way  creates and disseminates stories around the world   So who control the media is also the controller  of the creation of society and that’s why media  . matters so much.
If we concentrate the ownership  of media in very few hands if we concentrate the   generation of stories in very few people  we’re gonna construct a world that only works   for a few people so the only way to really  be a democratic society, an open society a   society that is good for everybody is creating  a society where media is accessible to everybody   and where media is a key and central element of  democratization, participation and development.

This week, we have considered how media can help to facilitate communication within communities – through a discussion of community and participatory media.

We learned about some of the ways in which media can be used to serve a community – but also some of the challenges faced by such community media. We also learnt about some of the values and ideas underpinning a participatory approach to using media for development.

We hope these examples and ideas have encouraged you to think more broadly about how media can be used for development – beyond media representations – and appreciate how important inclusive communication can be in promoting positive social change. We think that the importance of community and participatory media is well summarised in the video above.
