I hope you have enjoyed learning about the basics of the immune system so far! Now, we transition to learning about medically relevant topics in immunology. Physicians and scientists have harnessed the power of the immune system to immunize people against deadly infectious diseases. In fact, the use of vaccines led to the global eradication of smallpox in 1980! While the immune system is wonderfully designed, there are instances when it doesn’t work quite right. Immunopathologies are disorders of the immune system. The immune system is involved in many disease processes, including type 1 diabetes, allergies, and asthma. The prevalence of these diseases has increased in the last few decades. Interestingly, this increase is not global, but these diseases are more common in richer countries.

You will also learn about the “Old Friends Hypothesis” which attempts to explain why these diseases are found more often in richer countries. Next, Dr. Cohen will discuss transplantation. Did you know the first organ transplant was a kidney transplant performed in 1954? Since then, much has been learned about organ transplantation, a life-saving procedure! In MiniMed Introduction to Medical Science, Dr. Cohen spoke about red blood cell transfusions, which are a much simpler procedure than organ transplantation. Dr. Cohen will explain why it is important to find a donor match.
