Introduction to Week 3

introduction to neuroscience
Welcome to week 3 of Hot Topics in Medicine! In the first course of Mini Med we covered the basics of the nervous system and senses. Now, you will expand your knowledge about higher functioning brain processes, such as learning and memory. The brain is made up of a hundred billion neurons that make about a thousand trillion connections. Learning and memory involve formation and strengthening of these connections. These active processes are happening as you go through this course! Dr. Cohen will talk about common disorders of the brain. Psychiatry is the study of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
You will learn about three common psychiatric conditions: depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. For each condition, you will learn about the diagnostic criteria, symptoms, and underlying biology. Dr. Cohen will briefly touch on some of the treatments used in these disorders.
