The definition of autism has changed since first being described in the 1940s. Autism is now called Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD. ASD more accurately describes that there is a wide spectrum of the disease, ranging from mild to severe. Dr. Cohen will cover the diagnostic criteria, signs and symptoms, and epidemiology in the first video. In the second video, he will review the biology of autism and brain development by highlighting data from studies using cutting edge technologies. While autism is a diagnosis most often made in childhood, dementia is one of aging. Alzheimer disease is the most common type of dementia. Dr. Cohen will outline the clinical features and underlying biology of Alzheimer disease.
Importantly, you will learn that there are things you can do to lower your risk for Alzheimer disease
including: avoiding smoking; eating a healthier diet; and getting enough exercise. Do these recommendations sound familiar? Finally, Dr. Cohen will cover the clinical features, risk factors, and treatment strategies for stroke. Healthcare providers often say, “Time is brain.” The typical patient loses 1.9 million neurons each minute in which stroke is untreated. So, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke in order to get earlier treatment. You will learn the acronym FAST to help you remember the warning signs and symptoms of stroke.
