Introduction to Week 4

Introduction to Week 4
Welcome to the final week of Hot Topics in Medicine! Cancer is a feared diagnosis for good reason. It is the second leading cause of death in the US and western Europe. Cancer can be characterized in many different ways. Dr. Cohen will provide an overview of the terminology used to describe cancer. After that, he will cover the important topic of diagnosis. Diagnosing cancer early gives people the best chance for treatment success and overall survival. This is the rationale behind screening, or testing for cancer in the absence of symptoms. For example, a colonoscopy screens for colorectal cancer. You can talk with your healthcare provider about when and how often they recommend screening for certain types of cancers. Next, Dr.
Cohen, will review cancer statistics, including incidence, or occurence of new cases, and mortality, or number of deaths. The study of cancer statistics, or the epidemiology of cancer, can reveal important events that affect cancer incidence and mortality. At the molecular level, cancer depends on mutations. A lot is known about the types of mutations that occur and in what sequence those mutations occur. These discoveries were made thanks to breakthroughs in DNA sequencing technologies!
