Finding the balance

In this video, Dr Kevin Fong discusses the challenges of postoperative pain management while tackling concerns about long-term opioid use.

In this step, Professor Kevin Fong OBE, Consultant in Aanaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at UCLH and Professor of Public Engagement and Innovation at University College London, comments on the clinical cases featured in the previous step.

Kevin highlights the challenges of balancing the utility of opioids against the risks of prescribed opioid-related harm and how insufficient safeguards in the postoperative period can lead to one of the negative outcomes associated with the use of these analgesics – persistent postoperative opioid use (PPOU). Later this week, we will outline the risk factors associated with PPOU in Step 1.19, and explore these in greater detail throughout the course.
