Summary of Week 2

Summary of the Week 2’s learning & preview of Week 3

Well done on getting through an intensive week!

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of different opioid drugs that determine how they exert their effects. This knowledge is vital to inform our appropriate use of these agents in the perioperative period. We also need to be mindful of the negative effects of opioids and try to mitigate these wherever possible.

Next week you will focus on opioid stewardship and improving the safer use of opioids around the time of surgery. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss different legal frameworks which influence the use of opioids and hear from experts about opioid-free anaesthesia, non-pharmacological pain management strategies and novel approaches to the management of early persistent postoperative pain.

We look forward to seeing you again in week 3!
