Predicting the past: Read all about it!

Using image, specifically artwork from the Tate Collection, as a stimulus for predictive writing in literacy lessons.

So far we’ve considered what a given film might look like from sound and predicted what happens at certain points. Now we’re going to use a still image to predict what happened before.
Look at the artwork above. Does the horse look calm? Consider what you think happened before this moment. What led to the men losing control of the horse? Was it a series of unfortunate incidents? Or did a competitor loosen the horse’s leash? You might wish to read more about this artwork on the Tate website for contextualisation purposes. If so please click here.
Prediction activities can be very useful when working with tenses. This particular activity will focus on the past tense but other times the activity could focus on future or present.
Predicting the past
For this activity we’d like you to create a short, four-sentence newspaper story entitled Horsing around! Equestrian Drama on High Street based on the above artwork.
You should include the following:
  • A verb (past tense) in each sentence. Two with the -ed suffix and two without
  • At least two time connectives in the four sentences
  • At least one example of alliteration.

Extension Activity
In Week 2 we will do a small amount of filmmaking. If this is something that you go on to develop further, a great activity could be creating a news report retelling what happened in the run up to a famous artwork.
