Making the case for promoting a healthy weight environment

How can we bring together public health and planning systems and policies to promote a healthy food environment?
How can we bring together public health and planning systems and policies to promote a healthy weight environment, with a particular focus on the food environment?

Over this four-week course you’ll explore the role of planning in relation to public health and how the planning system can be used to shape local food environments and support healthy lives. The course covers the role of our environments and town centres in shaping individuals’ food choices, how public health has been considered within the planning system (now and in the past) and how planning levers in England, and more broadly, can be used as part of a whole systems approach to promote a healthier food environment.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for local authority planning and public health officers who are looking to build their understanding of how local planning policies and planning decisions can be used to shape local food environments. It is based on the system in England. It will also be useful for other decision-makers such as the Planning Inspectorate, Planning Committee members and general users of the planning system from planning applicants to the general public.
