Glossary

Obesogenic environments – The food environment broadly refers to ‘the opportunity to obtain food’ and has been defined as the collective structural, environmental, socio-cultural, economic and policy surroundings, opportunities and conditions that influence people’s food choices. An ‘obesogenic environment’ is therefore one where less healthy options are the default.

Wider determinants of health – Social and environmental factors that influence health are referred to as wider determinants of health, these can include factors such as housing, transport, employment, access to greenspace, and retail environments and access to healthy food.

National Child Measurement Programme – The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) measures the height and weight of children in Reception class (aged 4 to 5) and year 6 (aged 10 to 11), to assess overweight and obesity levels in children within primary schools.

Health Survey for England – The Health Survey for England monitors trends in the nation’s health and care. It provides information about adults age 16 and over, and children under 16 years old.

National Planning Policy Framework – The Framework sets out the Government’s planning policies for England and how these should be applied in local policies and decision-making.

Planning Practice Guidance – The Guidance sets out detailed guidance in support of policies in the National Planning Policy Framework.

Local Planning Authority – A public authority whose duty it is to carry out specific planning functions for a particular geographic area.

Local Plan – The local plan sets out priorities for the development and use of land in the local planning authority’s area.

Supplementary Planning Documents – Produced by local planning authorities to build upon and provide more detailed advice on the policies contained in a local plan.

Permitted Development Rights – These are rights to carry out certain types of work without needing to apply for planning permission.

Health Impact Assessments – It is a tool for systematically identifying the impacts of plans, policies and development projects, and for informing recommendations to promote and protect health and wellbeing and narrow inequalities.

Use classes – Uses of land and buildings are put into various categories known as ‘use classes’.

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment – A statutory assessment of the current and future needs and assets of an area to improve health and wellbeing outcomes and impact on the wider determinants of health.

Integrated Care Systems – These are partnerships that bring together NHS organisations, local authorities and others to take collective responsibility for planning services, improving health and reducing inequalities across geographical areas.
