Local Practice Example: Essex – “TuckIN: Making Food Better”
One local example of a strategy for encouraging healthier out of home food provision is TuckIn: Making Food Better (Essex). The scheme is currently supported by local authorities in Essex and Luton.

TuckIN is a scheme which supports local takeaway food businesses to improve the nutritional quality of their food. Businesses who sign up to the scheme pledge to reduce the salt, fat and sugar content of their food options, and provide smaller portions to customers (1). In terms of success, over 500 businesses signed up between 2014 and March 2021.

Businesses which sign up to the scheme are able to receive free online nutrition training, promotional materials for use in the premises and advertising on the TuckIN website and the local authority’s social media platform.

The scheme has twice been a finalist in the public health section of the Local Government Association awards and also a finalist in the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health Excellence Awards.
