What are the key learnings from TuckIN?

What are the key learnings from TuckIN?
Key learning from the programme includes:

  • Difficulty in generating initial interest; businesses need to be encouraged to engage and sign up
  • Important to keep messages simple for customers
  • Can take a long time to embed, and requires sustained effort to generate momentum
  • Once businesses see that there is demand for healthier food provision from customers, businesses will see the benefits and the scheme will gain momentum

This type of scheme can be delivered effectively by local authority environmental health teams, as they have pre-existing relationships with food businesses. The scheme could align with their existing work, for example engagement around schemes to improve the nutritional quality of food could be carried out as a part of regular food hygiene inspections, when appropriate.

It is also important to have complementary policies alongside this type of scheme. For example, hot food takeaway premises that are granted planning permission could be encouraged to join TuckIN as part of the planning permission process. This could act as a powerful lever to generate awareness and engagement.
