Knowing what success looks like

It is important for students to know before they begin what success looks like in terms of quality learning.

ANDREA: Linking back to the questions raised previously by Hattie and Timperley, when it comes to knowing ‘where they are going , the learning of the lesson not only needs to be explicit, but more importantly students need to be supported to know what good quality learning and performance would look like before they begin. I know that when I am going to create a birthday cake for my kids I go and watch a video of someone doing this first, or go and compare examples of others’ people have made, as I learn lots from understanding the process others have used or by considering what makes a better or worse example.

This is the same for the students in our classroom, learning from seeing someone model a process or discussing what qualities something possess can help them understand what they need to do to be successful.
Andrea discusses that it is important for students to know before they begin what success looks like in terms of quality learning. She shared some ideas related to how a learning can be modelled by a learner, this could be the teacher or another student, as well as through providing students with examples of different examples of work that they can compare and contrast.
