University libraries

Libraries give access to learning resources and provide a quiet environment for study, but they also offer much more. Find out what in this article.
University libraries give you access to learning resources (books, journals, databases etc.) and they also provide an environment in which you can study. However, in the UK university libraries provide many other services that you may be unaware of.

For example, libraries provide a quiet environment for independent study, but many also provide spaces in which groups of students can work together, discussing their work without disturbing other students.

In addition, as the internet now gives us access to a vast range of sources of information, university libraries are now playing a role in helping students learn how to search for information that they need for their studies. This includes, for example, using search features in academic databases and online journals, and understanding how to assess information in terms of its authority, currency and relevance. It’s easy to find information on the internet that is not suitable for academic study, but library staff can help you to learn how to find information that is suitable. It’s important to remember, too, that many online journals and e-books can only be accessed free of charge through your university library webpages.
