How project management is developing

This course invites you to join us as we explore the nature and role of project management in today’s competitive and ever-changing business environment. We also ask you to consider what roles you will be undertaking as you develop your career. Will you become a project manager, joining what has been described as the future’s ‘last profession’? (ARUP 2017: 25).

Before you start to develop your skills and knowledge of project management, take some time to consider how well your existing skills are developed. Look at the Project Management Institute (PMI) Talent Triangle, and the quote shown below, and assess your skills against it:

The PMBOK states:

While technical project management skills are core to program and project management, PMI research indicates that they are not enough in today’s increasingly complicated and competitive global marketplace. Organisations are seeking added skills in leadership and business intelligence. Members of various organisations state their belief that these competencies can support longer range strategic objectives that contribute to the bottom line. To be effective, project managers need to have a balance of these three skills.

Your task

Thinking about the PMI Talent Triangle and the quote above, consider:

• How would you evaluate yourself in terms of these three skills prior to starting the course?
• Why are you embarking upon this course? Are you adding project management skills to complement strategic and leadership skills?
• How will you use this exercise to set a benchmark for your own development as you progress through these courses?
