“When I try to look back over my career and why I’ve got to where I’ve got today, I think it’s primarily about setting myself very clear goals. I’ll let you into a secret about what I do. Every year on New Year’s Eve, I write down my goals for the year to come and they’re split into different areas. This makes me sound a bit nutty, but bear with me a second. Personal life, family life, work life, objectives, and they’re in a book, which goes back 20 years and that’s a really important part of me and tracing the history of me and how I’ve got there. Now, I don’t hit my targets every year. I do give myself a half year review, but I firmly believe that what gets written gets done and not every year is a great year. 2020 has been incredibly challenging for all of us, but it’s a really important part of mindset, of objectivity, of focus and of determination to be able to refer, in my case, to a written record. So I say, write down your goals, reveal yourself, keep yourself honest.”
