What is Agile Release Train (ART)?
SAFe is built around the concept of the Agile Release Train (ART), comprising 5-12 self-organized Agile teams that plan, commit and execute together. The ART consists of 50-125 people who have a common vision to deliver beneficial products or services to customers.
SAFe utilizes this ART for teams to integrate their work together in order to have working system demos every 10 weeks. Continuous system integration needs to be implemented at the highest level and at the feature and component levels.
The ART team participates in a two-day planning event to create objective milestones. Then teams maintain their own two-week sprints to achieve their target goals with the intention of integrating their work together for each of the working system demos. All work being implemented within each sprint must be in a software releasable state.
Customers appreciate this 10-week demo cadence so they can internally review each release increment. At that time, the customer may make recommendations for upcoming sprints so the teams can make adjustments in order to provide successful project future releases. Senior stakeholders also attend the system-level demos so they can understand project status and see if target milestones are being met as advertised by the groups.
It is beneficial to utilize multiple ARTs for large-scale projects with each ART integrating their work together in unison to create a more competitive space for the organization. By using multiple ARTs, organizations can supersize and deliver new technology at a high rate and volume within competitive industries.
This ART solution train builds large and complex solutions, consisting of hundreds or even thousands of team members. Many medical devices, aircraft, automobile, and aerospace manufacturers, as well as banking systems, utilize SAFe since many of these organizations are subject to industry and regulatory standards, and require proof of compliance.
