The operating system that we will be using is Microsoft Windows 8.1 Enterprise (64-bit), since it has an easy-to-use graphical user interface and has good community support.
Note: if you do not wish to use a virtual machine during this course, then skip this step and go straight to installing Android Studio in the next step.

Installing Windows 8.1 Enterprise

Note: the download file for Windows 8.1 Enterprise is 3.7 GB in size. It is important that you download the 64-bit version and you will need to register to do this.
A free 90-day trial is available to download from the Windows Evaluation website.
  1. Open the VMPlayer.
  2. Download and install the Windows 8.1 software. Once the software is installed, select ‘Play’.
  3. Create a New Virtual Machine, and on the first screen select ‘installer disc image file (iso)’ and select the file you have just downloaded.
  4. When undertaking the Windows Setup, select ‘Custom: Install Windows only (Advanced)’.
  5. When you finish installing Windows inside the virtual machine:
    a. Close your machine
    b. In VMware workstation player, go to edit virtual machine settings
    c. Go to hardware panel then processors, On the right, tick the box ‘Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI’ then select OK
  6. It is better to install VMware tools when you are asked to, but it optional.
  7. In the virtual windows installation, open a browser and login to your FutureLearn account so that you can continue following the instructions to install the remaining software.
You will now be ready to follow the instructions in the next step to install Android Studio.
