Introduction

Welcome to the Share Economy! In this course we will take you through the past, present and future of the development in the shared economy movement.

Hello, and welcome to the Business Futures programme, from the College of Business at RMIT University. The sharing economy is one of three courses within the business futures programme, in which we present some new and imagined trends in the 21st century enterprise. While you may have experienced sharing, something we certainly take for granted among family and friends, the commercialisation of this natural phenomena into a for-profit business has significant implications for traditional businesses. It is, indeed, a prime example of a business disruptor. We intend to add context to the concept of the sharing economy, to give you a greater understanding of why the sharing economy has flourished, and the implications for consumers and producers.

Throughout the course, you will hear from our RMIT academic, as well as entrepreneurs who have experience working in the sharing economy. We will explore the trends of the sharing economy, and what it means for the enterprise of the future, and how you might position yourself to take advantage of it. Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to engage and interact with other global learners through a variety of activities, and conversations. We encourage you to actively engage in this sharing, as a vital, and rewarding part of your online experience. I wish you all the best as you journey through the sharing economy.
