This isn’t just theory—there are companies out there making it work and seeing some pretty amazing results.

Mars, Inc. – Cocoa Farmers in Côte d’Ivoire

Let’s start with Mars itself. They’ve applied EoM principles to their cocoa supply chain in Côte d’Ivoire, one of the largest cocoa-producing countries in the world. The traditional model of sourcing cocoa often leaves farmers in poverty, which isn’t just bad for them—it’s bad for the sustainability of the supply chain too. Mars recognized this and decided to take a different approach.

They worked directly with cocoa farmers to help them improve their farming practices, increase their productivity, and ultimately earn more money. But it didn’t stop there. Mars also invested in community development—things like schools and healthcare—to improve the overall well-being of the communities where these farmers live. The result? Not only are the farmers better off, but Mars also has a more reliable, sustainable source of cocoa.

Royal DSM – Tackling Malnutrition

Another great example is Royal DSM, a global company specializing in nutrition, health, and sustainable living. DSM used the EoM framework to address malnutrition in low-income countries. Instead of just donating food or supplements, DSM partnered with local businesses and governments to create a sustainable model for improving nutrition.

They developed fortified food products that are affordable and accessible to people in these communities. But more importantly, they worked with local businesses to produce and distribute these products, creating jobs and supporting the local economy in the process. This not only helped address the immediate issue of malnutrition but also built a stronger, more resilient community.

Medtronic – Transforming Healthcare Access

Lastly, let’s look at Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology. They applied EoM principles to improve healthcare access in underserved areas. Medtronic recognized that in many parts of the world, people simply don’t have access to the medical devices and treatments they need. Instead of seeing this as a market failure,

Medtronic saw it as an opportunity to create shared value. They partnered with local healthcare providers and governments to develop low-cost, high-impact medical solutions tailored to the needs of these communities. By doing this, Medtronic not only expanded their market but also made a real difference in people’s lives.
