Please read the research papers that can be downloaded from the below link. [The Effect of Building Aspect Ratio on Energy Efficiency: A Case Study for Multi-Unit Residential Buildings in Canada] (https://www.mdpi.com/2075-5309/4/3/336) [Optimum Form, Aspect Ratio and Orientation of Building Based on Solar Energy Receiving in Hot-Dry Climate] (https://journals.ut.ac.ir/article_75922_9afd4bd3bdf4fb6e1c61cd4c88405acd.pdf)

These two papers study the energy consumption of buildings in Canadian and Iranian cities with varying aspect ratios. Aspect ratio is a key factor in determining the energy efficiency of a building since it affects the surface area through which heat is transferred between the interior and exterior environment, as well as the portion of the building affected by solar gain. The impact of solar gain can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on the aspect ratio and the climate of the region. These papers aim to evaluate the correlation between building geometry and location in order to develop a design language for energy-efficient buildings in different climate zones.

  • In our courses, we have discussed how passive building design can respond to climate, including the influence of building orientation and aspect ratio on energy efficiency. The two papers mentioned above provide further insight into the relationship between building orientation, aspect ratio, and energy consumption in various climate zones. We encourage you to explore more literature and resources to determine the optimal building orientation and aspect ratio for your local area.
