What is the Annual Information Statement?

The Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a once-a-year report that all charities registered with the ACNC must complete.

It has questions about your charity’s activities, operations and basic financial information. There are also questions which help the ACNC reduce duplicated reporting, which is when a charity reports the same information to the ACNC and to another regulator.

Once submitted, your charity’s AIS is available on the ACNC Charity Register for members of the public to search for and download.

When completing your charity’s AIS online, the system tailors some of the questions to your charity’s subtype, size and other characteristics. This is a way the ACNC seeks to reduce red tape for you.

When completing the AIS, if more questions open up as you progress or a drop-down box appears, please take the time to answer fully and correctly.

Doing so may save you from needing to submit another report to a different regulator. It may also save you from receiving a letter instructing you to resubmit your AIS with these questions answered.

This short course covers how to complete the AIS online and includes answers to some of the most common questions we get asked.

More detailed teaching on the financial knowledge required to complete financial parts of the AIS is covered in the short course Reporting Obligations of Your Charity Part B: Financial Skills for ACNC Reporting Requirements. There are links to this course throughout that can help your charity respond to particular AIS questions.

When completing the AIS online, the data you submit is grouped under the following main headings:

  • Introduction.
  • Information about your charity.
  • Charity programs.
  • People, finance and reporting.
  • Review and submit.

In this course, we will walk through each of these.

The ACNC also publishes a guide for how to complete each Annual Information Statement on its website. You may use the 2022 Annual Information Statement Guide to supplement this course, if needed.

Before starting on the Annual Information Statement, we will make sure you are correctly set up in the portal.
