Social licence - in practice

Use of the CEC framework can aid in engaging respectfully with the communities that will host energy projects.

We have just learned the ‘what’ of social licence. Now we will learn about the ‘how’.

Watch the video to hear Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council, discuss some of the key issues, topics and actions required to secure a social licence.

Before we delve deeper into the nuts and bolts of ‘how’, there are two frameworks that serve as helpful guides for social licence implementation.

First up is the Clean Energy Council’s best practice charter for renewable energy projects. This contains 10 commitments that guide industries to engage respectfully with the communities that will host their energy projects.

Broadly, these commitments outline the need for:

  • respectful, consultative and timely engagement
  • minimising project impacts
  • sharing project benefits with community
  • embedding a circular economy approach.

Second, the International Association for Public Participation is a leading voice in engagement and their spectrum of participation is a leading voice in community engagement and their spectrum of participation highlights the different levels of community involvement that might be pursued.
