Why is hydrogen an option in clean energy transition?

Hear from experts why hydrogen is a clean energy option.

Hydrogen provides many advantages in the clean energy transition.

Some of these advantages are:

  • no greenhouse gases emitted when used to decarbonise the energy sector (major point)
  • its versatility in terms of its wide range of applications (chemical feedstock, power vehicles, heat buildings etc)
  • can readily be stored and transported, making it well-suited for use in remote or off-grid locations
  • can be produced locally which creates energy security by reducing dependence on foreign sources of fuel
  • job creation / economic growth
  • storage for renewable energy sources (store excess / intermittent renewable energy supply / long term storage requirements).

Your task

Watch the video featuring Fiona Simon and Kevin Peakman and think about where hydrogen fits in with renewable energy. How do you think hydrogen can work alongside other renewable energy options?
