Hello,my name is Ludwig G Rieder. and welcome to this section on tourism planning practice. A little bit about myself. I have over forty years experience in the industry, extensive public and private sector experience in tourism destination development, research, planning and policy, at international and the regional levels and in tourism project design feasibility and implementation. Also,I have extensive experience in tourism destination marketing, and the operations of tourist facilities and services both in the Asia Pacific region and in several other parts of the world.

I have nine years experience as Director of Research Policy and Planning in the public sector in Australia and over thirty years in the private sector, as chairman of Challenge Hotel Corporation, Tourism Director of Perry Development Financing and as tourism management consultant and advisor. I am a co-founder of Asia Pacific projects, a tourism infrastructure development services firm founded in Manila in 1992, where we have advised the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, US Aid, the Asean Secretariat, and many national governments throughout Asia and the Pacific region.

In China,I’ve led teams that prepared twenty years tourism master plans for Sichuan and Yunnan province as well as designing tourism planning projects and interventions for Shandong, Gansu, Guangxi zhuang Autonomous Region, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Qinghai and the Jilin province. The scope of the lectures will cover five key areas. The first is tourism destination area planning. The second will deal with tourism product development, which is a key component of the first tourism destination area planning. The third lecture will deal with developing tourism events and experiences. The fourth assessing and evaluating destination plans, and finally presentation of some case studies illustrating the application of the principles the practices, the tools for the first four lectures.

Let me then begin with the very first lecture on tourism destination area planning. The objective here is to provide you with an indication of the meaning of the key terms which I think is very important. Secondly, the tourism destination area planning approach, process and the tools that are used. And I’ll try to illustrate this with some examples and then some readings.

Meaning of some the key terms in tourism destination planning. It’s very important that we understand the concept of travel and tourism as an activity of which tourism is actually a subset. And also to understand that travelers arrivals and visitors and tourists are units of tourism and travel activity. And this is very important when you’re thinking about the measurement aspects of the tourism flows and the tourism impacts into a destination. And finally a tourism destination and the tourism destination area as an area or places or space where the experience of tourists take place. Tourism sector comprises all the infrastructure facilities and services in the tourism supply chain that directly contribute to the requirements of tourists.

That supply chain includes not just hotels and transportation organizations operators, but it also includes the producers of food and beverage. It includes producers of construction materials, for example, hotel development roads and the infrastructure that goes with it. So, it is interesting when you look at this that tourism is an industry that has very deep supply chain connections to the rest of the economy and is one of the main reasons why tourism is given such strong attention as an industry that can contribute to economic growth. Tourism industry has used in this series of lectures is interchangeable with tourism sector.

The industry comprises groups such as the hotels, food, and beverage,transportation and so forth, and by tourism sector I mean the same thing.

Now, activities of tourism can be divided into several different types when its nature based activities which of course includes sightseeing and touring adventure which is activities such as hiking horseback riding, cycling, mountain, climbing, rafting and kayaking, paragliding bungee-jumping and so forth. Eco-tourism is more the focus of a nature base, so, birdwatching whalewatching, snorkeling, scuba,diving, tree planting and so forth. The next sort of category of tourism activity is what we call culture or heritage based, so, that includes religious tourism attending festivals and pilgrimages, the built heritage visit to historic monuments and ruins, museums, art installations, cultural landscapes and so forth.

And, of course most importantly and very recently a strong interest in living culture, in other words, emotions with communities local cuisine dining shopping and so forth. The other very broad area of tourism activities is relaxation, health and the wellness area. Here, we talk about beach and water activities, swimming, lounging, sunbathing in a resort environment. But it can also be recreation and sport a more active kind of a health and wellness activity beach volleyball, ballsurfing, yachting, island hopping, and game fishing. And of course wellness, focusing on spa treatments yoga Pilates detox and meditation.

So, those are some of the the main concepts that the tourism planner has to work with when looking at a destination, in terms of the way it might be developed in a structured way for accelerated tourism growth.
