In this week’s recorded expert discussion, Lia and Michael will talk about the challenges of permitting in Natura 2000 areas, both for companies and public authorities. In addition, they will discuss different ways for extractive companies to achieve a net positive impact on biodiversity and how to guarantee that conservation objectives are met in protected areas. Lia Mergulhão is a Geological Engineer at the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) in Portugal. From her role at the ICNF, she has extensive expertise on approval of quarries and open cast mining plans and projects, close to or in nature protected areas.

Michael Rademacher is professor for ecology & biodiversity at TH Bingen since 2015. He has extensive experience in environmental protection and biodiversity and has worked both in research and the extractives industry. Before starting his position as a professor he was director of biodiversity & natural resources at HeidelbergCement Group.
