Earlier on, you have learnt about soil moisture as an essential climate variable and how it is used to characterise the climate-land nexus. The animation in this video (©ESA) shows soil moisture anomalies based on thirty years of satellite observation products of the Climate Change Initiative project on soil moisture.

From soil moisture anomalies it is straightforward to identify excess (e.g. flood) and shortage (e.g drought) of water available for crops and plants.
