  • Why might pests or diseases not spread during winter?
The reason is because the winter temperature is not favorable to the life cycle of pest causing disease.

winter temperatures are no longer as harsh due to global climate change.
This implies that pest and diseases will replicate and spread respectively.

  • Good explanation on the differences between biosecurity, bioterrorism and biosafety.

  • In some communities in my country, beans weavil has affected the storage of beans and this has resulted in the dealers fumigating the beans with pesticide which in turn is deleterious to man and the environment.

  • Personally, both paper and smartphone app will be useful.

Hi, I'm Theodora Omadevuaye, a veterinarian from Nigeria.
Im excited to join this course on Global biosecurity for One Health.

  • I never knew poliomyelitis is caused by enterovirus and that transmission is via faeco oral route.
This disease is very common in the northern part of my country due to poor vaccination acceptance by the people there.

  • I have seen many cases of diarrhea in dogs while some survived, some did not.
Those that survived we're rehydrated with the appropriate fliud and were given antibiotics for secondary bacteria infection.

Thank you for the information so far.

  • I am truly grateful for this informative course. I will practice what I have learnt to contribute to the right use of antimicrobials.

  • My first step be to implementing good antimicrobial stewardship in your local context is passing the right information about the use of antibiotics.

Do you have a long term plan (or even just the beginnings of a long term plan) in order to achieve good AMS?
My long term plan is to create antimicrobial resistance advocacy group.

    What barriers are you...

  • I chose engaging my team and client base because everyone needs to be carried along and join in the fight against indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
It's a joint effort to ensure best practice antibiotics prescription.

  • My plan is to create a vet-led prescribing action group and discuss the experiences I have gotten from this course. Then we need regular training and meetings on how to achieve the goal of minimizing antibiotic use to zero level.

  • What I have learnt is to answer only the questions that are asked in both tasks.

  • Yes, it's not really easy for me also to generate ideas very quickly.

  • Yes, I agree with you on how difficult to get ideas on the topic.

  • What I find most difficult is how to brainstorm and ideas and how to present my points logically.

How do you think you can improve your writing score?
I can improve when I'm in conversant with different ideas of different likely questions. Then improve on my vocabulary.

How do you practise writing in English?
    By answering writing questions and...

  • Hello all, it's good to be here

  • Hi, I am Theodora, from Nigeria.

I am preparing for IELTS to improve my English language skills.

My dream job is being a veterinarian overseas.

  • Hello, I am looking forward to learning the strategies in acing IELTS at a sitting.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when having difficult conversations with clients?

Answer: I want to avoid telling clients what to do. Instead, I should ask for their ideas because the best answers usually lie within them.

  • My role is just to stimulate a discussion where the client feels comfortable enough to explore these ideas and ideally to move one step closer to change by being able to consider this new information as a value. It's only with choice, respect, and confidence that my feedback and information will have meaning anyway.

  • I have a client who is on contemplation stage.
He intends to change the diet and feeding pattern of his dogs within a short time and he is aware of the pros of changing, but also the drawbacks of time restraints, so he has not been able to change his dogs diet.

  • What could we bring over to our individual disciplines that would be useful?
    Answer:
Ensuring that antimicrobial guideline be implemented and strictly adhered to by all stakeholders.

What is the biggest problem in implementing AMS in veterinary practice at the moment, and is there anything being done in human practice that we could use to fix this?...

  • One difference between human medicine and Veterinary Medicine is that rapid diagnostic tests are very limited
So many times veterinarians treat without accurate diagnosis.

  • These cases have taught me a lot on how to approach different cases.

  • I will like to inform my colleagues that when they are presented with a case that they would usually be comfortable prescribing antibiotics for, they need to have the confidence as clinicians to consider adjunctive treatment, predisposing factors, and whether antibiotics are really indicated.
Also an up-to-date formulary should be handy.

  • Culture and sensitivity testing is one of the ways to confirm diagnosis, that's why it's very important to prevent antimicrobial resistance.

Before the start of this course, I have the knowledge that culture and sensitivity test aid in the treatment of diseases using specific drugs.

I have learnt that sensitivity to some drugs mean that other agents...

  • I am not into equine practice but the article is highly informative.

  • Week two has been very informative.

  • The first thing to do is knowing which diagnostic tests would be appropriate. Then go for such before treatment.

  • Open communication is very important especially among vets to be on the same the page.

  • As a clinical veterinary pathologist, diagnostic tests such as haematology, urinalysis, cytology, serum biochemistry has really helped in disease diagnosis and treatment has been based on diagnosis. This has reduced the use of antibiotics.
Then vaccination has helped in preventing certain disease although mostly viral diseases..
    When animals are vaccinated...

  • I would like to introduce the following:
Team work, having the whole team on board including pharmacy staff, vets, vet techs- everyone should participate and committed to delivering the same message to our clients.

Challenge current prescribing practices between vets; at clinical meetings we will discuss whether what we are doing now is still best...

  • I know cytology is a quick way to make diagnosis. It's incredibly helpful to confirm bacterial infection.
I agree that the focus for treatment should be, nowadays, topical therapy for all these surface and superficial pyodermas.
But for deep pyodermas, obviously, where systemic antimicrobial use is indicated, culture-based prescribing, following guidelines...

  • The most important factor for ensuring good hand hygiene to prevent infection either from humans to animals or vice versa.
So hand washing and hygiene must be a norm in every day Life and must be taken very seriously.

  • I do not have antimicrobial guideline document on my practice, so it's something I would like to have and follow through.

  • Informative lecture. It's a new approach of getting Farmers to reduce their use of antibiotics.

  • Investigating and managing recurrent infections to avoid repeated use of antibiotics is very expensive so to say.
It involves having accurate history, comprehensive clinical examination, analysis of samples e.g blood, serum, fluid from the thoracic or abdominal cavities, urine, skin scrappings, fecal matter etc.
Also in some cases, radiology, ultrasonography...

  • The use of delayed prescribing in my practice is not often used.
We often do cytology to diagnose the condition quickly and administer the antibiotics that is indicated for the revealed agent. But if no agent is seen with cytology, then we administer broad spectrum antibiotics in an emergency case.
Most times, antimicrobial therapies are not de-escalated...

  • First line antibiotics are usually the broad spectrum antibiotics, then after diagnosis is confirmed, a narrow antibiotic is considered.

  • I'm ready to gain as much knowledge in week two.

  • Nice week of informative lectures. Looking forward to week two.

  • Are you using diagnostics, like culture and sensitivity testing, to their full potential?
This is a major challenge I am facing. When there's no appropriate diagostic test and culture and sensitivity test to get to know the right prescription, then antimicrobial resistance will continue.

  • I think some similarities between human and vet. practices are
    1. Empirical prescribing of broad spectrum antimicrobials prior to a diagnosis.
    2. Targeting antibiotic therapy to the infected tissue.
    3. Longer courses of antibiotics have to be given because they cannot follow-up to see how the patient has responded to antibiotics especially in large animal...

  • Well I have not t been into exotic pet practice, but from the summary, its better when antibiotics supplements the natural defense mechanism and not the sole infection control.

  • One challenge I have had in my practice is what to prescribe in certain situations especially when no culture and sensitivity test was carried out due to client not willing to pay extra for such test.
I find it so overwhelming in this case.
There are very fewer laboratories for culture and sensitivity test and are far off my practice.
    Imagine a puppy having...

  • The challenges in achieving good antimicrobial stewardship are:
    1. A major problem is the availability and accessibility of antibiotics to farm owners with prescription by vets. Farmers having access to buy antibiotics for use in their farms have led to and is still leading to high resistance to these drugs.
Antibiotics should strictly be recommended and...

  • Although equine is not my practice but it shares similar challenges with small animal practice in the following areas.
    Client expectation & pressure.
    Drug availability.
    Diagnostics.
    Knowledge.

  • Antibiotic resistant bacteria are causing the challenge of empirical treatment failure which sometimes lead to the death of the animal if the case is severe.
Then there's a financial cost implications on the part of the client, with this the client fail to trust the vet in charge.
Most importantly, is that there is further resistance to antibiotics due to...

  • The current hand hygiene policies and guidelines in my practice is putting on clean hand gloves and disinfecting of the examination table before touching the animal in question.
Then washing of hands with antiseptic soap in running water, cleaning the environment with hypochlorite solution after handling each animal.

  • One major challenge I can relate with is veterinarians having different levels of knowledge and awareness in terms of antimicrobial prescribing.
And one solution is that we have some level of understanding of the specific antimicrobial resistance patterns prevalent in our country or different hospitals.
This requires regular reviews of cases and treatment...

  • I will sign up for the three programmes.

  • There are many approaches to a case, so with this course, I know I will learn other approaches.

  • I have witnessed active surveillance.
Samples were collected from the animals and culture and AST was carried out.

  • The issue of confidentiality is a serious one as farmers are afraid of running out of business if they disclose their antimicrobial usage.
Well I think if there's an incentive to farmers to reveal their data on antimicrobial usage, then they may be willing to share such data.
Then I also think all antimicrobial agents should not be sold to farmers directly...

  • The bottom-up approach is an effective way to involve farmers in the fight against AMR, if the farmers are integrated into communication forum and then their concerns are put into consideration, then it will go a long way in ensuring minimal or no use of antibiotics.

  • Initially, I thought it was a case of hyperadrenocorticism due to the wide spread alopecia.
But cytology revealed demodex agents. That's why the key to appropriate and effective treatment is the right diagnosis. I am really learning and enjoying this course.

  • If I were to handle this case as a veterinary pathologist, i would take the purulent sample and do a cytology. Then send same purulent sample for culture and AST, and send skin scrappings to Vet. parasitologists for the identification of parasites.
I will then base my treatment on the result of the culture and AST.

  • Informative video..post operative infection can be deadly if prompt care is not taken.
