  • Yes, this is indeed a problem. Burying waste is probably a worse option. Sorry, no easy answers. Anyone else have a suggestion?

  • Wonderful to have many diverse learners on the course! If something is not clear, or you just want to share your experiences, post your questions, so that the mentors and your peers can respond!

  • Welcome to the course! Wishing you the best as you learn new skills for COVID-19 molecular testing in the laboratory.

  • Hi everyone. The video for donning & doffing of PPE has been updated. Thank you to Uzi for supplying the links!

  • Hi Everyone-I'm André Trollip. Wonderful to have you on the course

  • Thanks

  • Thank you

  • You should change tips between samples

  • Hi-FutureLearn requests that you contact them directly mailto:support@futurelearn.com

  • Yes

  • Hi Bertha. FutureLearn request that you contact them directly on mailto:support@futurelearn.com

  • Noted

  • I will follow up with FutureLearn

  • We discuss this in Week 3

  • The immunoassays are covered in Week 3

  • Country specific

  • I will bring this to the attention of FutureLearn

  • Correct

  • The Ministry of Health (or similar) body should provide guidance on this matter

  • Great, thanks

  • Unfortunately, a prize was not awarded

  • Yes, GeneXpert will be used RSA for Covid

  • Both must be high for optimal test performance

  • Difficult situation. So little is known about the performance of tests that have not been approved

  • Thank you

  • Currently the demand for kits outstrips supply. As you select what platform to use, you need to find out whether the manufacturer can supply your needs. Clear?

  • ...and point being that people spread the virus while awaiting their results.

  • N95 offer better protection. The question is what do if none are available...

  • My concern is that samples not collected correctly could give false negative results. What do others think?

  • Thank you. Noted.

  • Thank you, I’ll follow this up.

  • Welcome

  • Great to have you on the course

  • Thank you for your comments

  • Lets see if any recommendations come out on this

  • Self testing is a hot topic...what do others think about it?

  • Welcome!

  • Yes, you are correct. In Week 3 we will provide information on immunoassays

  • Interesting ideas

  • Great news!

  • Thank you for sharing your challenges

  • Thank you!

  • Have a look at this resource-its not COVID specific, but does provide some guidance. Also see the Biosafety manual in the Downloads section:
    https://www.who.int/csr/resources/publications/swineflu/WHO_CDS_EPR_2007_6/en/

  • 0.5% or even 1% is acceptable-but be sure to use alcohol after. The corrosive nature of bleach is one of the considerations-weaker concentrations are better suited for cleaning instruments.

  • I agree with Moses.

  • I would suggest a modified hand washing procedure that extends up the arms. Thoughts from others?

  • Welcome Juan!

  • Thanks Elisabeth. Definitely something we can look at.

  • Regards infection while waiting to be tested-this is an important consideration. It's the reason why "drive through" testing has been implemented in many places. We need to ensure social distancing even under these circumstances.

  • I looked into this-there is really not a lot of information on the different sample types. The reality is a comparison of methods requires a gold standard, and it's just too early to know what that is currently. I found this that may be of some help:...

  • Thanks for your comments

  • -70C (or -80C) or dry ice is recommended if there is a delay > few days depending on the sample type.

  • Yes, it seems a crisis is what it takes to highlight the weaknesses in our healthcare. Lets hope that as we implement the necessary procedures these will improve the quality of testing across the network

  • Welcome Edith. I hope that the course meets your expectations.

  • Welcome Rod

  • Great to have you on the course!

  • Yes, an exciting development!

  • Great question. Whose responsibility is this? The laboratory or the clinical facility?

  • Agree. If the quality Of the sample is poor, the results will be poor

  • Controls should be treated the same as samples. What do others think?

  • Good question-I've not seen data on this. Perhaps someone else has insight?

  • This seems to be a common problem

  • Thanks-I removed the broken link

  • GeneXpert testing is at Level 1 and COVID-19 at Level 2. Since we always consider the higher risk, we should upgrade to Level 2. What do others think?

  • Thank you for your comments!

  • It’s important to think about the entire network when planning for testing. Distance to testing sites is a key consideration.

  • Thank you for sharing!

  • Interesting suggestions. What do others think?

  • Welcome-I hope you enjoy the course!

  • Welcome-I hope the course meets your expectations!
