  • Love it. The renewable energy supplier should be a relatively easy win (depending on where you live), and the solar panels will hopefully not only reduce your carbon footprint, but act as a signal and influence to those in your neighbourhood. Hopefully a double win!

  • It might not appear related @ShreepatiWalawalkar, but plastic waste appears on our construction sites, down our supply chains and in so many of the different elements of our urban ecosystem (think plastic-wrapped food coming into the buildings we build and inhabit). Taking even a small percentage of this out and making others aware is a great initiative!

  • I hope we continue to find more and more examples to share. Real life case studies can be so powerful in persuading others in the design and construction process that so much more is possible.

  • I love this one as an example of a totally different and ingenious way of approaching a problem, and coming up with a remarkably effective solution.

  • The UK is indeed making efforts, but we are still producing far more per capita carbon emissions than most developing countries. What encourages me is that there is a huge opportunity for developing countries to leap-frog over our mistakes to the clean technologies we are now introducing, and sharing these innovations globally will help us all as you point...

  • It is a big idea, but also common sense in many ways. For me it is often about thinking "what else can this building or project do for the individuals and community around it, beyond the simply physical (e.g. home/ office/ shop)?". It might provide employment for local people, or better health outcomes by incorporating cycle lanes or community gardens for...

  • This is a real insight isn't it @EliotPowell? We have more knowledge at our disposal than we sometimes pay attention to.

  • Nadine Jenkins made a comment

Great to see that you all found some insight or take-away. How we communicate is a critical factor, and there are some gems here. The Boundaries in Breaking Boundaries make the target far more tangible on a number of different metrics rather than just a generic 'sustainable' end goal. 'Nudge's' in thinking and actions can be small, but have a massive impact...

  • We can't always @PeterWokabi, but I do believe that there are many mechanisms coming into play nationally and globally that are helping to ensure that they are increasingly responsible. Public scrutiny of their commitments and statements by individuals and organisations helps, as do responsible investment criteria and reporting (e.g. TCFD). How we assess...

  • Hold governments to account is difficult but it can and is being done. In 2019 Urgenda won a landmark case against the Dutch government ensuring it acts to achieve its Paris agreement commitments. This has been followed by cases around the world. Just yesterday the High Court in the UK ruled that the government's net zero strategy is in breach of the...

  • We don't look in detail at different temperature scenarios @MichaelWellin, but we will be developing a course focusing more on climate change and the built environment which may explore this more. Scenario planning in this manner is something that many companies are now doing as part of their strategic and risk planning processes.

  • Very topical right now @MarkBretherton, both the interactions between the urban and natural environments (nature-based solutions in particular), and how property investments and associated risks are now being viewed through a climate lens - very different to 2008.

  • The differences in policies in different locations can have a huge effect on activities in different locations @RebeccaGreen. It would be great to hear from those in other locations as well, with planning systems from a different cultural legacy. Looking outside our own systems can sometimes offer a breakthrough we would never have found otherwise.

  • We are glad you did too Lee. We'd love to have your feedback on how it adds to your knowledge once you've got to the end.

  • @OSAMAHAMOUDA I agree, but would would argue that action must be taken by governments and corporations AS WELL AS individuals, and often governments and corps do so because individuals (and the groups they form) have put pressure on them to do so. It all matters.

Brilliant to see so many of you here from such diverse professional and geographical backgrounds, and with such positive attitudes. I do think that this attitude is critical in creating the kinds of innovations we need to achieve a sustainable future.

  • Love your attitude Lee. We do indeed have an amazing opportunity.

  • We will cover climate change and environmental aspects Hesham, but great that you are also interested in some of the broader issues surrounding and influencing this. We will cover them in week 2.
