  • Hi Elna - there are definite similarities there for sure. A good idea to build it into a module like we did was to have it at the end stages of a module after some depth has been established in the module, or at the start to enthuse students - then dig into the theory during the semester. It is a great technique to help students to engage, develop critical...

  • Hi Jacek,

We have so many first years in the Business School it was predominantly this cohort - but we did open it up to any other interested students. I would love to blend disciplines to get a more innovative team - it is the perfect way to mix programmes for short periods of time, without having to change programme structures etc. Huge benefits! Your...

  • Very interesting! I know a few of the organisers - massive achievement by all.

I do think that the physical setting is very important for a hackathon and studied a LOT of formats before deciding on the GatherTown one. Hackathons are supposed to be fun and engaging, so tools and processes which are disruptive or require induction will pull students out of...

  • @MatthewDeeprose Also to add to your video journey - you might like the wrap up video from our hackathon last week. I think it really gives a sense of the industry support. Any industry guest was asked to commit to a max of one online hour each. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK-6FhTjo-g

  • Hi Ester - this hackathon was quite large but they can be just as effective when in smaller groups, or a reduced scale too. It is also a great experience for mentors and judges to connect them to the curriculum without needing a large investment of their time.

  • Hi Niall - an excellent point and one we discuss regularly. The single thread that we echo throughout the hackathon and which features in our opening video every day is: Before you reach a solution, you must first understand the problem. We encourage them to fixate on the problem/challenge for the majority of the event, recognising the complexity inherent. The...

  • @MatthewDeeprose Exactly right - there is a huge amount of preparation involved in the design and getting the buy-in from external stakeholders. But there are ways to condense this too - for example rather than trying to find multiple mentors for a hackathon, use a postgraduate class, or get a key industry sponsor and use their graduate pool. As for the topics...

  • Hi Seppe!! Glad you liked it - the students loved the GatherTown platform and now that it is built - a template of it will remain for anyone to clone for their own hackathon event. If you send me an email at roisin.lyons@dcu.ie I can provide access for you to have a walk around!
