  • Bonjour tout le monde,
I am Gavin Clinch of the Centre for Online Learning at the Institute of Technology, Sligo in the north-west of Ireland. Late to the party as usual but I'm here now.
It seems to me that one of the major themes that will likely impact on HE in the coming years is 'Unbundling' and I'm interested to see how this plays out in the Irish...

  • We have customised Moodle to create an e-portfolio for the assessment of prior learning. The tool is currently being used by three HE institutions in Ireland and will soon be adopted by two more. We wanted to create a paperless and consistent RPL process for adult learners to apply for exemptions and/or advanced academic standing onto graduate and post...

  • I taught computer aided design on a fully online course and used Camtasia to create short 'How to' videos which I posted in Moodle. I also used Jing to create assignment feedback videos and shared them via a link to Screencast.com. Since there were 'common' mistakes students made I could sometimes use one feedback video for several students. Camtasia and Jing...

  • Sean, see the work of Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger on situated learning and communities of practice. a general introduction here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Situated_learning
Edmodo is a free, social learning platform - https://www.edmodo.com/

  • I have used Moodle for (100%) online courses and it is really important to build connections and relationships with and between students who will almost certainly never meet each other. The lecturer or moderator must create early discussions and encourage responses but can step back from this when students begin to support and respond to each other. I taught a...

  • There are many definitions of Blended Learning. Here is one I came across recently from the University of Wolverhampton's blended learning strategy (2008) - see what you think:
"The University defines Blended learning as the use of technologies to extend and enhance the student learning opportunities through the provision of tasks and materials which enrich,...

  • Hi Hazel, I think your experience with Padlet is common to so many of us looking to try or introduce new technologies into teaching and learning. Technology can be so frustrating and is rarely immediately accessible. We need time to learn and experiment with new technologies - to see how they work and if they are appropriate. Might be worth trying a smaller...

  • Hi Polly, it isn't obvious at first but when you double-click a small text box appears in the top left corner.

  • I think you are right Ros - the pallet wall can appear overwhelming with so many posts. Wonder if we need several pallet pages each with a slightly different BL focus. Definitely works well with smaller cohorts. Got to be worth trying out though!

  • It is great when you discover and get excited about a new technology - knowing immediately how you can use it in your teaching. I'm sure you will be successful!

  • Nice work with Pallet Carl. Good luck with student interaction - I'm sure you will be successful.

  • For BL to be successful the selection and use of technologies need to be aligned with and appropriate to the face-to-face learning.
The flexibility and accessibility afforded by new technologies has allowed many people to return to education on part-time (or full-time) online or blended courses. We have construction management students across the world who...

  • I created many short recorded tutorials for architecture students on how to use computer aided design software. Most recordings were about 10 minutes in duration and included bookmarks and were made using Camtasia. I posted links in a Moodle page and gave students assignments based around the tutorials. Students viewed the recordings outside of the classroom -...

  • We use Moodle in our institution. There is a fair amount of criticism directed at VLEs but they are great for many things particularly asynchronous discussion - especially when learners begin to support and teach their peers.

  • I think the interactive exercise does what it is intended to do and has us thinking and reflecting on how we use or could use technology to enhance learning. It has also promoted some lively discussion! Didn't change my perception of BL. Typeform I like!

  • Nearly 30,000 people were killed in the battle of Towton - about 1% of the population at the time. This would equate to around 600,000 today?

  • It seems that approx. 100,000 people died during the W of the R. Those going into battle appeared to have little choice. According to Desmond Seward ‘Out of 70 adult peers during this period, over 50 are known to have fought in battles they had to win if they wanted to stay alive' . If you were a member of the 50 or so great families of the time you couldn't...
