  • I’m also wearing a leather jacket, that my mom bought around 40 years ago.

  • I’m wearing a leather jacket and people tell me how cool and stylish it is... and they are very surprised that it’s a leather jacket that my mom bought in 1970s! It’s really durable.

  • A lot of environmental, social and cultural issues are caused by the influence of the “fast fashion”.
People choose fast fashion brands, because they can’t afford luxury or ethical brands: Fast fashion uses cheap materials, cheep mass produced designs (that often look really nice recently) cheap labor.
These consumers wouldn’t overpay for an organic cotton,...

Amazing presentation. Thank you. So many key points gathered together in a logical and clear explanation.

I was researching and I'm a bit confused... I saw different numbers about water usage for jeans /T-Shirts production: According to WWF (and a previous podcast of the week 1) it takes more than 20,000 liters (5,283 gallons) of water to produce 1...

  • Hi everyone! My name is Inessa. I'm working as an actress in educational, travel, inspirational films/videos/ and advertisement - I've also been working as a fashion model and a commercial model in advertisements for almost 10 years. I always felt I am responsible for the messages and the products that are delivered to the world through my image.. So, I was...

  • Thank you, @JosephShaw

  • Zero waste blogs, challenges, FB groups, youtube videos are a great source of ideas how to avoid plastic - as much as possible.

Though the challenge of plastic and microplastic seems to me quite overwhelming.. besides my husband is very skeptical: he says that my individual action - won’t make a change, and quite often, it's not easy to find alternatives for...

  • Here’s something we as individuals can do to be more sustainable: food sharing application. For example - olioex.com - there were more some time ago, but now I can find only this one. “OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local shops so surplus food and other items can be shared, not thrown away.”

I wish this application spreads to more cities...

  • Thank you, @ReginaV @TessaCoombes
    Harmony:
    • between people and nature (even with the progress and new technologies.)
    • between people (genders, nations, ages, etc)
    • inner harmony, inside of a human.

  • I’m working as an actress in educational, travel, inspirational films/ videos/ advertisement - together with local artisans, ethical enterprises, organic brands, and also I’m working as a simultaneous interpreter during international conferences on sustainability / SDGs. Two different professions, though devoted to one major topic - sustainability. At first...

  • 1. leaving a conversation - sometimes it can be more challenging than starting one.
Rachel decides to talk to somebody else and says:
...And I must go and have a quick chat with that guy before...
So she has a chance to meet other people.

    2. Following up - two years of following up, staying in touch, conversations, telephone conversations and social...

  • Ella, I think this is a pure meaning of sharing - when things that you want to give - (to read children in the evening) are needed somewhere else. Just before this course I found - www.timerepublik.com - it works anywhere in the world, you can join with my link, so we both get 30 mins bonus - www.timerepublik.com/referer/inessakraft

  • Good point, a couple of times I booked a "studio apartment" in Airbnb, but it turned out to be a room in a hotel.

  • Very comfortable accommodation (private bedroom, or entire apartment/house): Airbnb, Couchsurfing, EducatorsHomeShare - main reasons: * I don’t want to be treated like a tourist in the hotel areas * I need kitchen.
Transport: Grab – taxis are cheating sometimes, App is more trustful, better cars. (I've never used Uber)
    Last week registered in...

  • Sharing supports sustainability: re-using, repairing(=more jobs to local skilled workers), making things we love for others via peer-to-peer/time banks. Though businesses don’t see further than “today”. In Malaysia GRAB sent a newsletter - to sit on the front sit - as a friend, not behind as a “passenger”, because taxi drivers "bully" GRAB. Yesterday's article...

  • I’m a big consumer/ participant.
Transportation: i use GrabCar and GrabShare. (I also just rent from a man downstairs and drive, not sure if it’s a part of sharing economy..)
Accommodation: 1) AirBnB "entire home" section.
    2) Couchsurfing.com and educatorshomeshare.com - accommodation for free - you can’t just book it like a hotel - first you establish a...

The sounds seem to be "tailor made". I saw that the film was made in 1989, I wonder, if at that time, the creators could have "sound libraries" like we have now, would they use the digital sounds, or they would still use their own... seems that sounds that they used create a very special atmosphere in the film.
(It was a very interesting task! Besides Mark...

  • I love your choice of a background music and attention to the details... like when a man touches bear, or bear's "rrrr" when he hits his head.

  • the video is private, please change ;)

  • here are my results: https://youtu.be/lny6qDnAJFA

These libraries have an amazing choice of everything I needed: www.freesfx.co.uk and YOUTUBE AUDIO LIBRARY.
Some of the sounds that I used: cave ambience / walking in a mud puddle / 2-3 different bear growls and cat's purr / 2 different camera shutters, a funny sound for a hit / birds singing. Music -...

With no regulatory framework or support scheme for renewables, the Russian wind energy sector is underdeveloped, the country has not yet developed large-scale wind energy production.

  • Based on different information sources, it seems, that Russia in general is not very interested in renewable energy. I'd really love to hear comments or other opinions, if I'm mistaken.

Below I'll share a couple of links and...

  • Oh, true, that reaches Earth. Thank you :-)

  • Thank you! :-)

  • How interesting! Do I understand correctly, that every year, the sun radiates 8.000 times more energy, than modern humanity consumes per year by using fossil and nuclear energy?

I wanted to create something warm and magical: https://youtu.be/GLB5aTE7WaM
    used:
    ** camera - iPhone 5s - slo-mo.
** lights - 1)- christmas lights 2)- another mobile phone as a "torch" + mini-tripod for mobile phone to hold the "torch". 3)- bedside lamp 4)- transparent files (orange and red) to soften the torch and lamp light + two clothes pegs - to fix...

  • very interesting. at around 5:10 - i like - oh! what's this :))

  • I agree with Eva. I saw many times and was thinking of the "restaurant" example as well. Technologies are used by parents to neutralize the presence of a kid - both at home and public places.

  • Journalist: "So, your kids must love the iPad?”
Steve Jobs: “They haven’t used it”
    Journalist: ?!

    From the same article:
Although some parents I know give smartphones to children as young as 8, many who work in tech wait until their child is 14.

  • totally agree, we should be aware of all the logos. Indeed, companies pay for product placement, but if you have a logo without a permission, they can make YOU pay, saying that you are using their brand to promote your film. A friend of mine had to re-shoot several scenes, because a couple of logos got into frame.

  • I have a question - what if one of the characters of my documentary quotes a book.. 2-3 sentences, naming the book. Will I have any problems with copyright? Do I need to contact the publisher to get their permission?

  • Book publishing has a similar triangle, talent -publisher -distributor.

  • looking back at the previous lessons 2.4-2.7, seems the order is like this:
    stage 1 ---
    stage 2 * First option payment: £10,000
First draft screenplay plus one set of revisions: £20,000
    stage 3 * Option renewal payment: £5,000 * Director’s retainer: £5,000
stage 4 * Writer’s fee for director supervised polish: £5,000 * Line producer’s fee for production...

  • Yes, the course helped me a lot!

    # 1 right now I can bring to the next level educational short films for web, that i'm making for homeschoolers and for language learners. I'll use what I've learned with you about sound, interviews, storytelling, framing.
    # 2 for a while I was working on a short film - "The Turning Point" - www.imdb.com/title/tt3990560 My...

  • i really like this Producer/Director Louise Lockwood - her style and approach, thanks for including her tips into the course!

  • Everything is very useful! I don't mind, that a lot of professional equipment is used in the lessons.
It would be wrong - if the course covers only amateur or low-budget equipment - and if it's the most we learn, after accomplishing the course. The course introduces us to the professional standards, equipment, terms, (gives us the whole picture) and if we...

  • same here - sound worries me a lot. I know so many nice short films spoiled by a terrible sound. voice over can help, but it's boring to use VO only; Dubbing can help, but it can be too complicated. A link to http://nickgarnett.co.uk from the class “3.6-filming with your smartphone” was very interesting and useful! But still I’m looking for more info about...

  • in the lesson 3.6 - "filming with your smartphone"- on the bottom of the page there's - ‘Seven tips for making great content on your iPhone’ - that leads to http://nickgarnett.co.uk - i found there some useful tips about sound.

  • Here’s an interesting short videoclip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUBzAc9DcHs
showing how light affects the face.
"Getting the light right on a face can mean the difference between complimenting and even enhancing it’s features or making it appear unflattering."

  • Shots used: Establishing shot - Wide shot (WS) - Midshot (MS) – Close Up (CU) – Medium close up (MCU) – Extreme close up (ECU).
Also the director suggests to use - pull focus, tilt downs or pan across - to get us into a new sequence, or a new section of that sequence. He mentions, but not uses in his final video - cut-aways - to add colour to your story. ...

  • a friend of mine once had a dilemma - she had an idea to shoot a series of short documentaries about a beautiful and clean town.. in an amazing location/region.. in Asia.
But she didn't film, as her video could turn the "paradise" into another standard touristic destination.
I consider, she was very responsible, but, I wonder - if she could do something...

  • 1 story of the landlord / pub / song.
2 story about the people, who are disconnected from each other - so near, and yet so far (background singing: "it's a long way..." is opposed to the map, and distance, where neighbours live 30-100 meters). choosing tv instead of real communication.
3 story of a small business vs megabusiness (comparing prices in pub...

indeed sometimes your film and location start giving you their own directions! :)

  • some things that helped me or people I worked with: 1- CELTX for writing scripts and organizing storyboards. 2- "shot designer" a free mobile app - to create floor plans and to design how camera moves. 3- test (rehearsing) shoots, a few days in advance, if the time/conditions allow.
