  • Paula, I think one of the most fascinating things about social media is the ways that others will criticize, put down, or censure others in public ways (perhaps it's easier because it doesn't happen "face to face"). It's not necessarily a happy topic, but important to understanding normativities!

    Very interesting. My PhD advisor (who was over 60 years at the time) always wrote emails with contractions like "yr" for your, "thx" for thanks, and even "wlm" for his name, William. I found it amusing, and I'm curious how it began but it always seemed like a rejection of the establishment from an unlikely source to me!

  • Hi Monica, I can't speak for Juliano, but I think while there might be a stereotype that wealthier people might be more conservative, in this particular context it does not necessarily apply. That's the beauty of anthropology. We always find something unexpected!

  • But back to the original question, your statement that "people have no choice" precisely indicates the level of naturalization of these technologies. if people feel they have no choice, that indeed indicates that these technologies 'have become simply a taken for granted aspect of ordinary life.' Unless I'm still not understanding what you're trying to say.

  • And to clarify my point: I don't think the postal system is amazing and advanced. I find it quite lacking and in some ways outdated. However, when the US organized mail so that people weren't individually paying travelers to carry their personal correspondence, that was an incredible innovation for some people...they saw that the way I see the amazing ability...

But I think we have to be very very careful in saying that they don't have a choice. There are plenty of people who do not adapt these technologies at first.
