A blank page is never daunting but INVITING :)

  • Just like when nature calls & you can't avoid answering, I had a rush of ideas bursting out of my mind and could do nothing else but stop to write them down. I used years of practice of mantra meditation to zoom out the noise from the crowd, the cars & the fountain in Trafalgar Square. I climbed on top of one of the lions & scribbled away for 2 hours.
    As...

  • try it all & see what works for you

  • Alone in a quiet environment is great.
For motivation, visualisation is everything to me

  • I write to air a gigantic overcrowded mind & because language/communication fascinate(s) me. Also because me & anyone else can become whatever I want on paper...

  • I'm influenced by the clip from 1.2 but the idea is great!

  • I have always had a precious notebook & a pen I enjoy writing with. I use it mainly for song writing. It is a great friend to the creative process

Hello there, I'm checking out this course 'cause I just self-published a (short) novel & have a draft for my second. I'm a musician. Write songs, sing them on different bands & make the music videos too. Pleased to meet you all

  • thanks, Pete!

    Thank you, Maria! :)

  • cool, thanks

As soon as I get the right wooden box, I'll upgrade the design :)

  • Thank you very much for giving us this course. I was able to build my own lighting box. Enjoyed many of the short films. Figgis' tips & talks. Really appreciated the chance to edit scenes & sounds.
I'm glad I invested my time on this course.

I liked the challenge of trying out sound editing

  • yeah the chickens & bees were easy to recognize as human voices. Cool tho

  • Narada C made a comment

Ah this is cool to see. I'm happy with my own edit :)
I reckon many of the sounds are totally 'man-made'. Let's see..

  • This was another interesting task. I gave it a good shot. I am a better musician than sound editor but here you go:

This was such inspiring tip, I made my own lighting box!

Muic in films sometimes enhances the emotional aspect of a scene, and sometimes is there to manipulate the audience and 'direct' their feelings towards something, someone.

  • I want to mention the TV series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, because it had excellent score music. Not to mention an awesome musical episode where songs & moods were matched to the characters :)

  • Sometimes music becomes almost another character in a scene. I think of Masked Ball by Jocelyn Pook in Eyes Wide Shut

  • Narada C made a comment

I don't know. I very much wish one of my songs would get featured on a film :)

  • Sound gives impetus

  • My mind's blank

  • That is the glory of editing :)

  • good one, tho I vaguely remember 6th Sense. Only saw it once. But Fight Club I watched 4 times I think...

  • oh thank you kindly! In retrospective I think I should've done better with the sound tho...

  • haha! true :) thank U

  • I liked havin' a go at the editing task the most

  • oh wow, that was interesting to see! I had some similar bits.
The use of the music was good.

There was a bit of continuity issue with a 2nd waitress bussing the tables. Anyhow, I more or less think edited to describe the scene & kept it a lil' ambiguous towards the end. I found it slightly funny how the waitress is so oblivious to the vagrant eating from a table. I wasn't too keen on the music provided so I worked with...

  • oh how I love overlay used like that. My video editor does not do that exactly as I want it yet

  • Narada C made a comment

    Different movement, sound & colour

  • Narada C made a comment

Yeah at first I thought she was going to have her bag stolen...

  • Narada C made a comment

Just want to say I did not notice the symbolic pole dividing the brother & sister as they walk. That's a great detail!

  • Narada C made a comment

the lil' brother telling her (and us) that their dad had really died in an accident was key

  • yes

  • I just commented about that film too. I saw an interview with Chris Nolan once where he explained that he tried to emulate the type of amnesia the main character had in the backward scenes

  • Narada C made a comment

can't get any more complex than Nolan's Memento...

  • Narada C made a comment

For me editing is such a crucial step

  • oh I used the word 'cornershop' too before watching this clip :)

  • I'd make a wide shot of the old lady going to the cornershop. Entering. She's quite old & fragile, so the local shopkeeper grabs the milk for her. She smiles with grateful wrinkly eyes. Close up of her trembling hands gettin' the money to pay. Wide shot of old lady coming back. Close up of very messy kitchen & mid shot of old lady eating her freshly made...

  • Ooh that's a great idea! I'm building some low-budget light box. When I finish it, will try :)

  • Narada C made a comment

Fight Club just came to mind. Thinking of the clever editing work that drops hints about the big twist, and also how it withholds info from us for effect.

  • Bad Education by Pedro Almodovar came to mind. It has film within a film.
Also, Hail, Caesar! by the Coen Bros.

  • I've always been into music videos & over the last few years I started to make lots of them. It's both a beautiful creative small space & a great training ground.
    Yeah!

  • Narada C made a comment

Wow, what a captivating style. Lotta emotion conveyed

  • I remember watching THAT scene & the twist of my stomach
    great work!

  • oh yeah, and Quadrophenia a long time ago!

  • Yeah I saw Trainspotting (couple times) & Billy Elliot

  • for me the hand held cam gave a sense of intimacy & danger. And the structure worked pretty well to keep you ineterested & maybe add one's own interpretation of the situation

  • Crime drama I reckon

  • I make music videos & use some story board and plenty of visualization

  • I seem to only know him from earlier seasons of The Walking Dead, which is a bit of a shame 'coz he was amazing on it & pretty sure he's done plenty of more interesting things..

  • Narada C made a comment

Ooh yeah, music video's my thing!

  • Narada C made a comment

the last 3 clips have been fantastic!
    thank U

  • Narada C made a comment

Yes yes yes!!! I need a grip. Totally. I just ordered one online to try. Got a feeling I ain't goin' back :)

    Brilliant!
Gonna check this out on my next trip to the supermarket

  • cool

  • If you write a novel that is not published or record a song that no one listens to, are they still a novel & song? Do a film is considered as such when it is watched?

  • that's cool. I liked the 2nd part.
I made a couple that made it to 1 of my YT channels https://youtu.be/iEuPNZfEXkM and https://youtu.be/9OJgD7SvanM :)

Great point about not finding the 'best' actor but the 'right' actor.
Like Tom Cruise in Magnolia or Keanu Reeves in Matrix..

  • Great attitude

  • I have no clue.
Just guessing Location, Subsistence, Actors ?

  • I commented on 1st two points in previous step.
Regards having an anonymous attacker for me it was more effective and just brought up what was bottled up in Richard's mind/heart

  • It's a pretty cool & unique animated short. It moved me to experiment with pixilation :) I should do more of that now that I think about it..

  • Narada C made a comment

Very interesting opening scene with Dido's Lament. I thought the security camera footage & the violence & the opera foretell tragedy and draw in. What got me at the beginning is the unemployed man coming back to grad the paper. i wanted to know what was that about.
I reckon this was inspired by true events or wishful thinking...

  • Narada C made a comment

Because I've seen the film I already had a picture in mind.
Anyways, I would have gone for something a little like...

  • yeah same here. The images of the film came to mind straight away..

  • Narada C made a comment

I really liked the camera work of the first scene!

  • Narada C made a comment

If you take the element of distribution, you still have a film made. Don't you?

  • Yes, that is the luxury of creativity. We can tell a 'real' story anyway we like :)

  • Still, the movie can be totally enjoyed as a work of fiction

  • Ha! Exactly how I felt!! :-D

  • I wonder if he got the title from the sign at 14:41 :)

  • The film The Rose (1979) came to mind. The story is based on the life (and death) of Janis Joplin but names & songs had to be changed 'cause of lack of permissions. If you were a super Joplin's fan like me you would recognize the anecdotes & Bette Middler's singing style as a tribute..

  • Ha! I was slightly distracted by the movement of the camera on this clip!

  • bingo!

  • Narada C made a comment

I thought the scene relied aplenty on the discussion at the table (about names) & the contrast of demeanour of the brothers

  • Definitely an identity theme going on.

  • Blade Runner?

  • A film about dynamics of romantic love & the impressions they leave in the memory.
    Or something like that...

  • Narada C made a comment

I liked the camera work on Tight Jeans, and the dynamic of the conversation.
I expected something deeper from The Park, based on the director's comments.

  • Week 1 = stimulus.
    I'm grateful for that :)

  • Overall really good work!!
Maybe excess of fog didn't always work for me & I wanted more from the ending but good filmmaking!

  • Not a filmmaker yet but I do lil' things like this
    https://youtu.be/q2IEatNzV94
    and lotta music videos
    https://youtu.be/JgfEXCBLUaI
    and what have you...

  • Narada C made a comment

I don't have any of them books. Not planning on buying/borrowing/stealing any atm...

  • Narada C made a comment

I was drawn to the '60 seconds with' section because of the length... but seems like a great site with lotta stuff to digest. If you got the time...

  • Limitations breed creativity

  • This short film (DOTTY) really, really moved me
    https://vimeo.com/128544536
I thought everything worked so well!

  • Yeah totally. He worked on Blade Runner 2049. Can't wait to see that one!

  • Welcome. It took a little search to find it so I thought best to share for others that felt compelled to check it out :)

  • Except the bit about "weird & boring"..

  • Randomly checked Director of Photography in Coen Bros. "Fargo". It's Roger Deakins. Often works with the Coens & also worked in 2 films with Kate Winslet, again as Director of Photography.

  • Visualization is key for me.

  • Just managed to find An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge on YouTube

    Excellent stuff!

Hi there, I've joined this course 'cause I want to learn more about filmmaking & my budget is tiny... I've done all the previous FL filmmaking/animation courses. I'm a musician who used to do lots of photography (in the 90's) & have developed a passion for video-making. Do a lotta music videos & would love to become a filmmaker.
    I often cite PT Anderson's...
