  • Apologies to learners who experienced problems accessing the interactive map. I have updated the link and this should now work for you without further issue. Please do let us know if that's not the case.

  • Welcome back to both of you! Lovely to have you join us again :)

  • @MikeHosken @BarbaraC Thanks for picking this out for us. I have corrected the transcript pdf and we are working on updating the video subtitles as soon as we can.

  • Hi Barbara. All good questions and hopefully you will find answers to some of them in Week 3 when the content turns a spotlight on some ocean inhabitants!

  • Hi Maarten...welcome back!

  • Hi Steve. The course has indeed gone through a few changes - would really appreciate your feedback in Week 4 to see how the different versions compare!

  • Hi @GalatiaPolitopoulou. Thanks for making us aware of this. I have contacted the site owner. The browser Chrome does trust the certificate (whereas Mozilla uses a different library of certificates it trusts) so you could access the site using that as an alternative. More information can be found here...

  • Thanks for letting us know @BrendanM. We will source an alternative link and update as soon as possible.

  • Thanks Andy and Jörg. I've corrected the link at the bottom of the Step now.

  • Hi Inneke and Elizabeth. Unfortunately we can only provide mentor support for a limited number of weeks for the course, but our next run starts again on the 9th of September 2019 in case you would like to sign up.

  • Thanks to all of you for participating in this activity; it's the first time we have run this with a group of learners so we will definitely be taking all of your feedback on board!

  • Hi @LeeScott thanks very much for your feedback on both courses. The course teams have have really enjoyed having you along on the journey and appreciated your engagement both with the course materials and your fellow learners. You've been an inspiration to all of us. Would you mind if we quoted this comment in our course sign up pages and testimonials?

  • @MariaGrigg thanks for your feedback and I'm glad you are enjoying the course. Can we have your permission to quote this comment in our course signup page and as a course testimonial?

  • @KarenKnightley Thanks for your feedback - I hope your mum enjoys the course as much as you did! Could we have your permission to use this as a quote on our course run sign up page and in testimonials for the course?

  • @JohnCope Thanks for your feedback; could we have your permission to use this as a quote on our course run sign up page and in testimonials for the course?

  • Thanks for highlighting this Salyna; we will update for the next course run!

  • Hi Trevor. Great catch. Thanks for making us aware! I've updated those Padlet walls now.

  • Hi Anne. Thanks for flagging this up for us. The link to the AEON website is just provided for further reading; the video itself is the one on the top of this Step page.

I have tested the link for Grassridge with a colleague and it appears to be working. Please let me know if you are still having a problem with it!

  • Welcome back Maarten. Please let us know what you think of the new content!

  • Reposting here for any learners who have trouble with Padlet:
You can access https://padlet.com from the following web and mobile browsers:

    Firefox (58 and above)

    Opera
Mobile Chrome on Android Jelly Bean (4.1 and above)

  • Hi Anne and Margaret. Sorry to hear you are having problems with Padlet. Please could you explain a little more about what the issues are?

  • Welcome back Lee!

  • Apologies to our learners who experienced problems with the final Padlet walls. The issue has now been resolved, and you will be able to share your images now. We appreciate your feedback on the course itself; the team really look forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing your final images, so please do give it a go.

  • Hi Isabel. Thanks for bring this to our attention. The small version is available on the link, but the zoomable version is not accessible now. I will look into creating a new one.

  • Hello again everyone. I'm pleased to report that the Padlet issue is now fixed and you can share your images on the walls!

  • Good morning and welcome to our Learners. We are sorry that you've had problems uploading to Padlet and the team is looking into it this morning. We are looking forward to seeing more of your images and will have this resolved as soon as possible.

  • Hello @WilliamDevitt You might find this link informative; it explains three important learning theories and the differences between them. Traditional didactic teaching methods draw heavily on the behaviourist model and there are some scenarios in which this is an essential part of learning. However, constructivism recognises that an individual's learning is...

  • Hello to all of our learners. We have enabled a new moderation feature on the Padlet walls for this course run. Your image will not show up straight away as it will need to be approved by the team. This is new for us; we are always trying to improve the course and your learning experience. Please do give us feedback and keep an eye on the walls for your posts....

  • Glad to hear you found a solution Hilary!

  • Hi Lee...have you joined us before for a previous run?

  • Hi Hilary. Thanks for bringing this to the team's attention and I'm sorry that you're having a problem accessing the videos. You might need to try clearing the cache on your browser; here is a link to Chrome's instructions. http://www.meetchrome.com/delete-chromebook-cache-and-cookies/ Please can you give this a go and let me know if that solves the problem?

  • Hi Elaine and Patricia, we are keen to develop the course so it is accessible for all of our learners. You are of course welcome to share your thoughts in the comments if Padlet doesn't work, but if you could give us some more detailed feedback about what isn't working for you then we will try and improve this activity for everyone. Thanks!

  • Hi Sasha. Stephanie's research was funded by industry. The funder/company is looking to minimise impact on the whales in a variety of ways. For example one possible output is more efficient propeller design to make quieter ships.

  • Sarah Fielding replied to [Learner left FutureLearn]

Hi Jill. I have been in touch with FutureLearn and they are very concerned to hear you are having problems with the quiz feature. Please can I encourage you to contact them directly so that they can better understand why this problem has occurred and so that they can fix the issue?

  • Sarah Fielding replied to [Learner left FutureLearn]

Hi Jill. Thanks for this feedback. I will pass it on to the FutureLearn team so that they can look into it. Apologies again that you haven't been able to participate fully due to these problems.

  • Sarah Fielding replied to [Learner left FutureLearn]

Hi Jill. Thanks for bringing this to my attention and I'm sorry that you haven't been able to participate. I'll explore alternative options and we would really appreciate any further feedback you may have on how we can improve on what's available.

  • Hi Roger. I can indeed attest to the fact that you have been participating in the course (having commented on your posts in week 1) and I'm sorry to hear that you have received an automated FutureLearn email to indicate that you haven't! As a partner to FutureLearn our course team operates within the FL platform, but there are some notifications/design...

  • Thanks for alerting us to this Hannah. Unfortunately this happens form time to time when we are live, even though we check the course before the start date. We will try and find a good alternative and update accordingly.

  • Hi Martin, the blog is back online now.

  • Thanks to all for our learners for sharing your thoughts and images for this activity. I'm sorry that Padlet is being unreliable for some of you. There are a large number of images shared on the walls and this might cause them to be slow. I have created an extra wall (link is on the page above) so if you have not shared an image but would like to try again,...

  • Thanks for pointing this out Егор. Text is now corrected.

  • Thankyou all for your patience whilst we work to resolve our blog problem! It is back online and our IT services are investigating the issue.

  • Hi there. The issue with the blogs should have been resolved but a high volume of traffic may be causing a problem. I'll report this again with our University IT support. Apologies for the inconvenience.

  • You posted at just the right time for me to see it Lee! Text issue should be corrected tomorrow once the change is signed off by our central team.

  • Thanks Brent; always great to see our learners helping each other out.

  • Hi Manash. Click on the text of the mentor's name and it will take you to their profile page. Underneath their picture and short description is a pink 'Follow' button. Click on this to follow the person.

  • Hello again to all of our learners. I'm pleased to tell you that the course blog is back up and running. I hope you enjoy the extra resources!

  • Hello again to all of our learners. I'm pleased to tell you that the course blog is back up and running. I hope you enjoy the extra resources!

  • Hi Lee. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll see about getting the text corrected as it appears that we haven't caught up with a FutureLearn platform update.

  • Hello again to all of our learners. I'm pleased to tell you that the course blog is back up and running. I hope you enjoy the extra resources!

  • Hi and welcome to all of our learners joining us today. I apologise but we are having a problem with the blog this morning. The University's IT services are investigating as I write and I hope that we will have this resolved for you all as soon as possible. I hope this temporary interruption doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the course and look forward to...

  • Thanks for the extra information Susan; I'll pass that along to FutureLearn and am working on a Plan B!

  • Thanks for the tip Brent, and to Alex for providing it...we will add it to our list for the next run (providing the link still works then).

  • HI Susan. Sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties viewing this video on an iPad. The same problem came up for a couple of learners in our previous run and FutureLearn are still looking into it. It seems to work on some iPads and not others apparently.

FutureLearn have advised trying the following troubleshooting steps:

    Clear cache and cookies....

  • Hi Molly, this will be covered in more detail next week (Steps 2.6 onwards). Feel free to skip ahead to that section and the mentors will pick up any further questions next week. Please give us feedback on our explanation :)

  • Wow! Thanks for joining us on the course Rob! Will follow the move with interest.

  • Hi Roger. I'm really sorry to hear that you've had this problem; it does sound frustrating. It's not something I've come across before in previous runs of our course and it may be a FutureLearn platform issue. I had a look at your profile and I can't see any comments that you have made either. Please could you report it using the grey 'support' button in the...

  • Hi Heidi. Thanks for letting us know. The course is checked prior to starting, but unfortunately external websites do change their links whilst we are live. I'll see about getting this updated/replaced asap.

  • Thanks very much for your social media contributions David. Best of luck with 'flexible retirement'!

  • Hi Paul. The Shipwrecks course has a great blog (full of interesting reads) to keep you busy until the course starts http://moocs.southampton.ac.uk/shipwrecks/ and you can register your interest for the course itself using this link http://moocs.southampton.ac.uk/shipwrecks/

  • Hi Paul. You might also be interested in taking our Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds course (starts in January next year).

  • Thanks Maryam - that one got past us in the edits. We will get it updated.

  • That's a great squid Harry!

  • Hi Linda. This has now been updated to something less commercial and more informative! Thanks for making us aware of the issue.

  • Transcript now available. Apologies for that omission.

  • Thanks for alerting us to that Ann!

  • I was with the media team on the day this video was shot. I can vouch for the fact that Mark really does hate roundabouts...and that he did this in a single take! Which was just as well because he couldn't manage another after that great effort.

  • Apologies to our learners experiencing difficulties viewing this video on an iPad. The problem has been logged with FutureLearn and they are looking into it for us. It seems to work on some iPads and not others.

FutureLearn have advised trying the following troubleshooting steps:

  • To all our learners...
The link to the Lusiad English Translation is back online. Whilst we were looking into this issue we also found this great digitised version of the original
    https://www.wdl.org/en/item/11198/view/1/1/

  • To all our learners...
We have updated the additional links on this page. Regrettably sometimes we are unable to find a suitable alternative and really appreciate you sharing links to other sites that you have found interesting. We have now added an interactive map of the Challenger Expedition and a link to the Challenger Society for Marine Science which are...

  • Hi Holly. A free certificate isn't a feature currently offered by Future Learn on their platform. We hope that an important outcome for this course in particular is to discuss what you have learned with family, friends, colleagues and raise awareness of the future of our oceans and the potential impacts (positive or otherwise) that we might all have.

  • Apologies to our learners; all links in the course were checked just prior to going live. Unfortunately some of our links have broken in the last few days and we are working to find alternatives for you. If you do find some through your own explorations online, please do share them with everyone in the comments section!

  • No problem Lynn; I can have a 'tidy up'. Thanks for contributing!

  • Hi Linda. From time to time we will use other web tools to enhance the course...unfortunately, FutureLearn always opens these (and all links) in the same tab/window rather than a new one. If you right-click on any link and select 'Open in new tab/window' then that should help prevent losing the course.

  • Thanks for making us aware of this Michelle (and Jim!). I'll look into this and report it to FutureLearn.

  • Hi Deborah. Thanks for drawing this to my attention. I have just tested the link using the course page and Chrome as a browser and it opens with no issues or warnings for me. I'm sorry that you've had this problem.

  • Hi all

Just a reminder about our Live Q&A session at 5pm today with Dwight Coleman (Director of the Inner Space Centre). Dwight has participated in over 25 research cruises, and the Inner Space Centre plays an active role in the Nautilus Live Program, which broadcasts oceanographic research cruises in real time. You can watch the event here, and post your...

  • Hi Frank, sorry to hear this. You certainly shouldn't have a problem with replaying video. Please could you report it to the FutureLearn technical support using the questionmark icon in the bottom right screen? It's not been reported by other learners and may be due to settings on an unfamiliar machine or something to do with the FutureLearn platform.

  • Hi John. We would love to be able to help you to share it. www.slideshare.net will allow you to upload a presentation file and make it publicly available. You should be able to upload a Keynote file, but if not, just convert it to Powerpoint (under your sharing option with mail/message etc) and then upload. You will then have a link that you can share in the...

  • Hi John. Do you have the option to share a link to the presentation? If so, please post the link here in the comments. If not then I'll look into it further.

  • Hi Tania. I was there on the day for filming and I can confirm that was Mark's one and only take...

  • Hi Alan
Just to reiterate the instructions in week 1 about getting help; please report any technical problems that you are having with FutureLearn to their technical support (there should be a questionmark in the bottom right of the screen). We are responsible for the course content and design of activities, but we are not responsible for the FutureLearn...

  • Hi Lindsey and Anton. Apologies and thanks for bringing this to my attention. The problem link has been removed until I can resolve what has gone wrong there.

  • Hi Richard. Unfortunately the FutureLearn platform will always open a link in the same window (it's not a conscious decision on our part). If you are using a device that will let you right click a link and open in a new tab/new window then that should help. Otherwise please do report this inconvenience to the FutureLearn team via the questionmark in the bottom...

  • Hi Mary and Julia. Thinglink is a third party (not FutureLearn or University of Southampton service) and, like many online tools, it's part of their business model to offer extra features such as full screen if you sign up. You can access all of the data and hotspots on the free version without going full screen.

  • We currently have a fantastic 444 posts across all of the walls and this of course does not include your contributions in the comments below. Thank you to everyone; whether you have successfully posted, shared your thoughts/links in the comments below, or engaged with other learners' contributions in some way!

  • Hi Peter. No mystery or significance there; it's just the naming convention I used to set up a number of walls. We set up multiple walls as they tend to freeze if large numbers of people try and access them at the same time. We do still experience some issues, but it's a very popular activity. The team really enjoy everyone's contributions as it's one of our...

  • Hi Lynn. Sorry to hear you are having problems with accessing the video. Do the videos in other steps work for you? I've just tried the link using the browser Google Chrome on a PC and it is working for me. Can you tell me a bit more about what kind of machine/browser you are using? If the problem is a technical issue with the FutureLearn platform you can...

  • Dear all. This is always a popular activity in the first week and we love to hear about what has brought you to the course. Don't worry if you haven't been able to post an image; we really appreciate your posts in the comments below. It goes to show people are very keen to share and discuss. Thanks so much for your images and comments so far.

  • Hi John, you are welcome to discuss your findings with others but please wait until after the quiz on the next step. The comment containing your answers will be removed, but not to worry, we know it was an honest mistake!

  • Hi Learners. Our interactive Thinglink image should now be working fine, but please do let us know if you have problems. Due to an issue with integrating Google Maps we have removed this from the image, but you can also see more maps via this link https://tools.wmflabs.org/geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Cayman_Trough&params=18_30_N_83_0_W_

  • Hi Learners! I hope you are enjoying the start of the course. We are having a couple of issues with links within the interactive map. We do apologise if it hasn't worked for you and we expect to have the problem rectified tomorrow. In the meantime please do check out the rest of this week's materials and visit the map again later.

  • Thanks to all who watched (or attempted to watch) the Q&A session. Here's a link to the recording of the session on Youtube which should be straightforward to view. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTaAJhtdyCI

  • Thanks for the feedback Allan. We will definitely look into improving this. The session was recorded, so you can watch at a later time by following the same link.

  • Sorry to hear that Allan. Please could you try the link one more time for me now? You may get a screen with a picture of the team, you will need to click the Play button in the middle of the picture.
