  • Thanks Zane. Many academics and practitioners have FT subscription and may be able to download the article. In addition we recommended google scholar to search for why it project fail publications.

  • What way do you feel digital leaders connect to the environment - other companies within thier digital business ecosystem?

  • Some ideas to share with you. Digital leader is good to engage with digital business ecosystem actors - I 'd call them complementors. Complementors as horizontally and vertically interconnected upstream and downstream firms (start-ups and incumbents), from within and outside of a sector, that work collaboratively together within a entrepreneurship ecosystem...

  • I really enjoyed your definition. The core things here are "taking calculated risks." which links managers and entrepreneurial behavior, but working with external and internal counterparts - absolutely , its sharing data, etc efficiently both int and externally, and engagement with ecosytem actors.

  • how does each of these type use technology? or this is not necessary, if you are a barrier blinder for example?

  • very interesting segmentation of leaders!

  • Interesting article on Mobile apps and consumer behavior you may find. New research on mobile behavior in 2015 reported that business and consumers have been struggling to manage 100s of apps . Today’s consumers are spending over 85 percent of their time on their smartphones using native applications, but the majority of their time – 84 percent – is spent...

  • Really like your comments, definitely the developers of apps and hardware manufacturers do not align and do not coordinate their activity, but they should! What do you suggest thou: extra batterry, people do that, or stop dowloading apps or you see it as a gapo to be addressed by entrepreneurs?

  • would you reckon both F2F and digital communication?

  • Really appreciate your response. This is a problem . Anyway to match software with hardware more efficiently? apart of buying more RAM of course

  • people want if there is motivation to use technologies. The question is more about what should be done to motivate people to exploit technological benefits

  • From your comment it sounds like delegation is an important skills for the CEO to be able to champion digital technologies, is not it? What is CEO then left to do with re digital technologies?

  • anyone can advice free software to process big data, except of excel?

  • what digital analytical tools you have in mind for the future toi use? what problem you can solve using them?

  • so how many apps do you think one person should have on his mobile phone? easy to manage?

  • This is very valid point. Could you please think of combining several competences out of IT/ business to form capabilities for CRO? would you mind contacting EU commission to consider amendments to their project?

  • these dimensions are dynamic and not static. For example business and market acumen in the digital leadership could be perceived as alignment of business strategy with operations required to support it and how well you know your customer

  • what the the role of digital skills and capabilities to facilitate company's performance when digital is applied a a tool?

  • It seems like your definition applies to ll industries. Isn't it?

  • This is all correct. where would you put infrastructure for iT in your definition?

  • Thanks Edit . For me the major challenge of yammer has been and remains lack of training on how to use it effectively and engage with members . Have u experienced same or perhaps in the beginning ? Have you provided special training on how to use it ? Another important aspect as external people you invite to yammer . Have they participated and what makes it...

  • Good example of connectedness across sectors and applications . More on IOT this week .

  • Great point . Having close access to customers SMEs could benefit by usin mixed methods - both analysing customers and then talkin to them on how to improve things . Business outreach for sme is different than for a large business and it could be used as an advantage to get further insights on big data

  • Good questions . The answers are obvious . No point having data if you don't make use of it . However the company - client does here and significantly improves its ROI and market growth . Good example of big data and analytics should not be ignored , but you need technology and skills to hop on it

  • Of course , almost across all sectors

  • Interesting point . Yes it scans social media whatever related to the compny . Incl Instagram

  • Thanks for picking it up . The case could be applied to a smaller company as well , obviously more limited due amount of data .

  • Is Python a free source . Perhaps the basic version is free ? How does it different from Google analytics for example ?

  • Great point! Google analytics could be the first to start with , then a number of other stat software incl Matlab , Stata , R. Of course special big data analytics incl megaputer polianalyst is very cool , but also expensive . Companies should teach their employees - economists and marketing , finance use data analytics or employ people with such skills . It's...

  • Deliveroo would be another example . Fast delivery from the high street restaurants

  • I wonder if you are familiar with Transferwise . The app is using money of members in the country not physically movin them try borders and hence saving on translations and offers a better rate

  • What do you think is missing in those apps for schools to download and use them ?

  • Thanks . What do you use basecamp for ? Connection , ideas generation ? Exchange ? Connection to partners ? Management of processs and operations ?

  • Yammer worked for SP foundation to share ideas and in particular for ideation and problem solving . Interestingly Simon says that 30-40 % of all problems were resolved due yammer . His secret is he provided training to employees how to use it and make it more interactive . Also you need to invite external experts - so it's used as communication channel with...

  • Do you use HiVE or NEST heating systems?

  • thanks for your comment.

  • what do you mean by Business digitalization? sounds like an exciting concept? Is it smth like turning a written data - digital ?

  • I hope you will also learn some structure and model of thinking through alignment of IT architecture and bus models.

  • Hello guys, as a lead educator with business and entrepreneurship background , i would say this course is a good IT-business alignment and myself I learnt a lot while designing it with colleagues from IT and business informatics. Could you please be patient and wait till week 3 and 4 when we go through all 5 major technologies and use case studies to explain...

  • Thanks Josephine. Please give a look at the first poll results and maybe you want toshare if smth was unexpected, useful or not? any feedback appreciated.

  • thanks for your discussion and contribution It was to show what are the major strengths and weaknesses of capabilities developed by firms which use technologies and how it help them to increase capabilities . Any questions?

  • thanks do you mean, the lanuage was very technical? It was to show what are the major strengths and weaknesses of capabilities developed and you may refer if this is smth related to you and where your business stands

  • Training seems to work very well, better than investment in R&D

  • Practical implications are important but what is approach to better embed technology into organizational practices / operations?

  • Yes you can

  • the average test score is calculated building on your engagement with the course. If you completed all 3 weeks and participated in discussions, comments, forums it will be high. Thanks for participating!

  • Unless its a big data , size of the company which will use it does not matter. The only option is SMEs may financially struggle to buy big data or employ analysts who will work and analyze it. The methods of analysis and approach thou won't change with a firm size. Finally, large firms may generate more data of their own

  • IT can give business a competitive edge

  • Interestingly, do you consider users of digital technologies be company employees or external users ? And how users may help in championing these techs in organization?

  • Many thanks indeed, great feedback. let us know if we can help in the futgure in your business, free of charge of course :)

  • Research describes as the relationship between governance and the ability to explore an innovate has an inverted U-shape this means that the returns from governance is positive should it be "light touch" which allows organisational improvisation and creativity. Excessive leadership and IT governance , as given in the example of large business will considerably...

  • Richard , great point you made , it's about a combination of factors

  • My background is in entrepreneurship - and resources as you are aware are the main constraints for startups . What they do is selling part of their equity to angels or private alternative investors ( crowdfunding ) to accumulate resources . Often making a client to pay for adjustment and further development of an app , etc. Resource- based approach is crucial...

  • The point you made is crucial . We did not include this question in a poll but from the e- leadership survey of efficient SMEs last year which was organised by Empirica up to 35-40% of business outsource their IT , in particular small companies . The main priority is given to development apps and cloud management , while social media , bus analytics and...

  • Dear Rama , " what is reasonable time " for your company , industry to operationalise on ideas ? Believe it or not on average in the UK it's 3 years , but in IT things move faster , maybe 6 months due higher agility and depressing ion of knowledge . Would be interesting to see how your company fits

  • Thanks Warren , if you had a chance to read the results of a first poll we found out companies spend on average 1-3 days a year for general training. This is less what European successful businesses we surveyed last year spend - on average 5.5 days a year . How many days do you or your peers spend on improvement your IT / business skills taking got time out of...

  • Of course , in the end its about resources , which are capabilities , skills , competences , experience , but also R&D investment , training for IT and innovation , which all require resources - money

  • Great and clear points . If you can also respond to a survey whatever fits better your vision it would be lovely . Thanks

  • Dear AJ , I completely agree SMEs constraints are different from those of large businesses , but also industry and stage of growth ( startup , early growth , mature) . I will contact FL legals to advise on a possibility to link these data with your pre- post survey to be able to classify responses according to a size of organisation where the learner works ....

  • Is this something you were expecting?

  • You follow the model to discuss a business of your interest and how both operational and strategic levels are aligned. If you opt in for an essay there will be someone reviewing your output. Please also be ready to review others.

  • Results of the poll last week are up ! Please give a look at let me know if any questions / comments?

  • Results of the poll last week are up ! Please give a look at let me know if any questions / comments?

  • Thanks Richard , I ll speak to admin and we allow for the survey be open over the week end. Get ready for the next and last one this week .

  • Thanks for sharing . What linkages would you suggest to add in the model ? Where it should be improved ?

  • A lot depends on business and product / service . But yes in digital age things are changing with IT being a spillover of sales and knowledge driving all business block ahead . Saying this a digital leader first need to start thinking on what service do you provide and how you deliver it ( printer pre-delivery test experiment) and then think how IT services...

  • Interesting idea on adopting business services from a vendor and then adjust your own IT services to support it and match with it ? The issue of adoption is not straightforward - company needs to have competences including e- competences we talked last week about . This to be able to understand how business services of a vendor work to adopt . It may require...

  • We will try to adjust next week with Sunday night to be the deadline , but cannot promise

  • About 250 people

  • Don't miss the second and last one this week

  • Amazon & Kindle have transformed a publishing sector, have not they?

  • Ulrike, challenging comment . Thanks. It originally came to feed large businesses, as in the SMEs more skills will be missing or overlapping. SMEs , and especially small businesses always struggle to get all these skills on board. Its academic , but also administrative - used by consultancies and government to certify businesses and develop job descriptions....

  • Could you pick one example, say E9 which is only in IT, and explain what skills (competence) it is linked in Strategy?

  • There is no right or wrong answer. You are right by assigning competences to two or even three dimensions as they are interrelated. Could you pick one example, say E3 which is only in IT, and explain what skills (competence) it is linked in Strategy?

  • Thanks Michael. You are right by saying its not only for hiring or talent management. its for people already in business, e.g. - executive development, organisational design. The former may be less applicable as competences and skills are about people, while a stock of knowledge and knowledge management is org design. Does this makes sense . I struggle to link...

  • Dear Maarten, the research has been done already, and we will share the results on Monday. Hope you'll find them appealing and interesting.

  • Thanks Justin - we'll be back on Monday with some interesting stats! Again we will not identify you or your business rather than providing an average (benchmark analysis) indicator within each areas of business

  • Sam, if it does not apply to you or your organisation, no worries just do not participate in a poll

  • Dear Learners, I appreciate your opinion and thoughts. The survey is voluntary and if you do not feel like participating please don't . If you like the idea of bench-marking yourself against other learners and digital leaders on this course please do. This is our offer to you.
This surveys aims at helping the learners to see where their organizations stand...

  • This is an EU framework which is used for employers to build up job profiles and search for talent

  • e-Leadership is of crucial importance for companies and
industry to excel in their business operation. e-Leadership
is key to using new digital technologies for innovation and
transformation, managed in a relevant organisational
context and embedded in the business strategy. e-Leadership
skills are the skills required of an individual to initiate
    and...

  • There are few which get into all three dimensions. say B2? can you expand please why do you think it will go to all 3 dimensions?

  • Thanks Gaia, Machines will take over with IOT era. more on IOT in week 4. We need a structure and clarity at the moment to see who is a digital leader. not many know why digital is required before a leader.

  • Hello Gaia, Thanks for introduction and comments. You are right re 2 issues of confusion when companies looks for professionals with e-competences and digital readiness. Its a lot about managing expectations - what is expected from a digital specialist? Its not about coding , rather than thinking strategically on comp[any development and markets. Its about...

  • a pilot study to examine the fishhooks before we get started is important. Not all technologies are friendly and they may disrupt and destroy existing efficient practices and routines. A pilot is a win-win story - its also known as Minimum viable product - a technology prototype you test before playing with a fishhook

  • I feel championing digital technologies in ICT industry is easier than in the other. This is because ICT offers relatively low-capital intensity entry points, as well as multiple paths for upgrading. ICT was also the first high technology industry to fragment and globalize, and indeed was the upgrading vehicle of choice in the most successful emerging...

  • Updating practices and routines organizations need a talent - people with knowledge of IT and business

  • What would be an important condition (apart of financial resources) for top managers to commit and adopt most recent digital technologies ?

  • Change is very important as it allows for new ideas and technologies to enter the market

  • Championing digital technologies within organisations would be easier if both digital leaders and employees had more competences and experience of dealing with technology. These could be named e-competences?

  • Digital leadership sometimes called e-leadership with the demand overwhelming the supply for digital leaders. Did you know, that digital leaders positions in Europe are estimated to be around 620,000 in 2015. Demand is estimated to reach 776,000 in 2020. Europe requires up to 200,000 digital leaders by 2020. Without further action Europe will not be in a...

  • Innovation is an acceptable product in the market, when the value added is crated. Unless it is in the invention stage it cannot be commercialised and hence become innovation. It might be a terminology issue, though invention is a prototype which has to be accepted by the buyers

  • Innovation - commercialised invention

  • New product / service which has never existed in the market. Could have elements of design, needs creativity and knowledge to be created / adapted
